Wakeup Copenhagen, Borgergade

Located on a tree-lined street in central Copenhagen, Wakeup Copenhagen, Borgergade is housed in a seven-story brown brick building with a stark, institutional look that was designed by the well-known Danish architect, Kim Utzon. The spacious lobby area gets lots of light from large floor-to-ceiling windows and has a chic, modern vibe, with black walls, and gray tile floors covered in circular rugs in olive green or brown and yellow. Modular sofas in faux leather, lime-green armchairs, and molded faux-wood rocking chairs keep things from being too austere and serious. Life-size black-and-white photographic prints add an artistic touch to the sleek, minimalist decor. The hotel has been open since 2014, and it's popular with both leisure travelers and business visitors on a budget.

Wakeup Copenhagen, Borgergade is in a convenient location in the city center, and just a few minutes' walk from a metro station. There are lots of cafes, bars, and restaurants located nearby, as well as shops and supermarkets, and many of the city's tourist attractions are within walking distance.

Rooms at Wakeup Copenhagen, Borgergade are clean and well-maintained, but tiny, with only 129 square feet of floor space. Rooms are not much wider than the length of the bed, and are sized more like college dorm rooms than ones in a hotel. The Wakeup Large Rooms are only slightly bigger, measuring only 161 square feet. Family Rooms are made up of two small rooms with a connecting door. Decor is simple and minimalist, with stark white walls and lime-green curtains adding the only hint of color. The basic furniture is practical and kept to a minimum: There are storage drawers under the beds, open wardrobes, semi-circular glass tables, and small folding glass-top table next to the beds. All rooms are air-conditioned and have flat-screen TVs.

Not surprisingly, the bathrooms are cramped as well, and fitted with enclosed shower stalls that leave little room to soap up. The bathroom walls are made of frosted glass, which can compromise privacy. Hairdryers are provided, but toiletries are limited. Note that there have been reports of noise from other rooms due to thin walls.

As with most budget hotels, amenities are limited here, but the Wakeup does provide just enough perks to enhance its comfort and value. The breakfast buffet costs an extra fee, and includes a continental-style spread of bread, eggs, cold cuts, cheese, fruit, and cereal. There's no proper restaurant, but the 24-hour bar located in the lobby has drinks and snacks available for purchase. There are also several computers with Internet access available in the business center off the reception area, and guests can print documents for a fee. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel and on-site parking is available for a daily fee. Bike rentals are also available on-site. Note that luggage storage costs extra.
