Little local charm or character
The 37-room upscale Hustyns is a destination resort with a luxury spa surrounded by 100 acres of Cornish countryside. Hustyns calls itself a "country hotel," but there's nothing country-bumpkin about it. Part of a time-share corporation, the resort is far from the major tourist attractions and beaches of North Cornwall, and, once there, guests will find gourmet dining and plenty of activities for all ages, but little local charm or flavor. Guest rooms are huge, spotless, and sophisticated, with modern bathrooms; lodges with full kitchens and spa tubs are also available, making this property a great choice for vacationing families. For something a bit more romantic, travelers could try The Scarlet Hotel, a four-pearl property overlooking Mawgan Porth.
Scene
A destination resort with kids' activities and an adult vibe -- though little Cornish character
Hustyns is a large resort property located
on 100 acres of North Cornwall countryside. The vibe is corporate country
estate: all the trappings -- lawns, leather furniture, stone walls -- but none of
the history, quirkiness, or taxidermy. Hustyns is part of a time share
corporation, and the hard sell is on, but guests can shut it out and enjoy the
views of Bodmin Moor with a good scotch. Kids are welcome here, and there are
plenty of activities for them, which parents also relish so they can send their kids off
and find a little adult time. The atmosphere in the common areas is
very adult, however; this is not a place where guests will feel comfortable
breezing through the lobby in wet swimsuits and bare feet. In general, the
decor is a hodgepodge of styles, including pockets of Asian influence, such as
the dark, Buddha-decorated, red velvet-lined bar at The Restaurant. The Bistro Bar, on the
other hand, has bright white sofas and a milkshake menu, with windows onto the
indoor pool. For a restful country holiday, with no need to go anywhere off the
grounds, Hustyns has enough fitness, spa, and sport options, plus super-comfortable and spacious guest rooms, for visitors to rest and recharge while
staring out at the Cornish moors.
Location
Secluded, on 100 acres of countryside, far from tourist attractions and coastal towns
Hustyns is located on 100 acres of Cornish woodland outside the town of Wadebridge. The resort is reached down a series of confusing and narrow country lanes; guests should be alert on the road, as the hotel is tricky to find, and the local drivers are assertive. It is a considerable distance -- about 35 minutes' drive -- from Hustyns to the coast and area tourist attractions. Visitors who want to explore Cornwall may want to stay closer to town. Padstow, with its medieval houses, fishing, surfing, golf, and picturesque harbor, is around a 30-minute drive. Tintagel Castle and the Lost Gardens of Heligan are both 40 minutes away by car, and the town of Penzance is about one hour away.
Rooms
Spotless and huge, with sophisticated decor that retains a homey feel
Rooms at Hustyn are either standard (but
spacious and luxe) hotel rooms or luxury lodges with full kitchens, decks, and
private saunas. All the guest rooms are clean and bright, with a huge amount of
space and sophisticated furniture and textiles. There are lovely botanical
prints on the walls, and comfortable sofas and chairs, for a real homey feel,
but fancier. Bathrooms are modern and spotless, in white tile, with shower/tub
combinations or, in some, separate shower stalls and soaking tubs. Lodges are picturesque
from the outside, with stone terraces. Inside, there are full-size kitchens
with stainless steel Bosch appliances, dishwashers, and quality cook- and
serving-ware. Many come with private saunas, and some have jetted tubs.
Amenities in all room categories include air-conditioning, safes, flat-screen
TVs with DVD players, tea facilities, free toiletries, bathrobes, and twice-daily housekeeping. Rooms have mini-fridges.
Features
Luxury day spa, large indoor pool, state-of-the-art gym, kids' club, and a choice of bars and restaurants
Hustyns has a luxury day spa with an
extensive treatment menu that includes reiki, body scrubs and wraps, massages,
facials, and a complete range of beauty services. The large indoor pool has a
lane roped off for lap swimmers, and is surrounded by lounge chairs for
watching the kids or relaxing with a good book. Several hours have been set
aside for adult swim. There are two hot tubs on the pool deck. The fitness
center is a true, state-of-the-art gym with a training floor fully stocked with
cardio machines, free weights, and Cybex equipment, as well as a separate
stretching room. Classes are offered, including spinning, yoga, pilates, aqua
fit, and bootcamp-style workouts. On the grounds, guests can play “crazy golf,”
tennis, basketball, volleyball, soccer, and more. The kids' club, while small,
is well-equipped and ready to take care of the younger set, while parents grab
some adult time. There is a large playground, and
kids' movie nights are offered. Playpens, baby proofing, and PlayStation3 or Nintendo game consoles are available in guest rooms upon request. There are two on-site restaurants, a
more formal dining room at The Restaurant, and The Brasserie, as well as barbecue grills about the
property for guests who want to cook out. Drinks and live entertainment are
offered in the clubhouse lounge and atmospheric bar.
