Bottom Line

Hotel California is one of the more affordable hotels in Manuel Antionio, offering all the perks found at competing mid-range hotels, but lower rates due to the less than convenient location. Guests must drive (or walk) 200 meters up a gravel road from the main paved road that leads to Manuel Antonio Park and Beach. The 28 basic rooms have furnished balconies, some with phenomenal Pacific Ocean views. There's an outdoor swimming pool as well as an adjacent restaurant that provides free breakfast buffet and excellent lunches and dinners at a reasonable cost for the area. Downsides include minor maintenance issues and no Wi-Fi in the rooms. It may be worth comparing rates with Falls Resort, which has nicer rooms, or Karahe Hotel, which has more basic rooms but private beach access.

Oyster Hotel Review

Hotel California

Scene

Distant Pacific Ocean views and Costa Rican flavor

The scene at Hotel California looks and feels more authentically Costa Rican than many competing hotels, which sometimes have a generic style that could be found anywhere in the world. There are some artistic touches as well, such as hand-painted tiles behind the waterfall in the pool and mosaic tiles on the lobby floor. Two sleepy dogs and a cat hang out around the grounds, which are thick and lushly planted with native plants and flowers. Mango trees supply fruit for the homemade ceviche served in the poolside restaurant. Maintenance issues are evident, but the property is well-tended and clean. Families and couples alike tend to stay here, along with the occasional tour group.

Location

A bumpy road off of Route 618

Getting to Hotel California can be a bit of a challenge, as it's located off of Route 618, the main road that ends at Manuel Antonio National Park and Beach. The road to the hotel is mostly gravel and pretty steep in some parts, through the jungle, with a few turn-offs to neighboring hotels. Past guests have reported a difficult time finding the road. There's a small house directly in front of the hotel's entrance. Expect a 10-minute drive or 20-minute bus ride to the park and beach. It would take well over an hour to walk there on the winding road with steep hills.

Rooms

Functional rooms with cable TVs and Costa Rican coffee, but no Wi-Fi

Deluxe and Standard Rooms don't offer too much in the way of style, but they are outfitted with some nice extras and are decently sized. All come standard with coffeemakers and Costa Rican coffee, bottled water, mini-fridges, air-conditioning, and TVs with cable channels. Unfortunately, only some rooms have been upgraded with flat-screen TVs and Wi-Fi is nonexistent. Double or king beds are topped with light blue coverlets, and some rooms have beautiful wood ceilings and sliding wood doors that lead onto the balcony. Bold and funky paintings add a splash of color to otherwise white walls. Bathrooms include tiled showers, single sinks, and white towels. Deluxe Rooms have gorgeous ocean views, while some Standard Rooms overlook the garden or include unattractive rooftops.

Features

Free breakfast, outdoor pool, and happy hour

Features at Hotel California generally focus in and around the outdoor swimming pool and unheated whirlpool. There are several sun loungers around the deck and a fun waterfall/cave, though the cave section needs major maintenance. Just next to the pool is the on-site restaurant, where a free breakfast buffet is served, including made-to-order items. Lunch and dinner offer excellent fish tacos, ceviche, and Caesar salads. Daily drink specials are served at happy hour and the bar stays open later than at most hotels. Views of the Pacific Ocean and jungle from the pool and restaurant are truly lovely, and there's a nice sense of privacy and seclusion overall. Wi-Fi is free in the lobby and restaurant, though past guests have reported a slow signal. Guests can park in one of three parking lots for free. Staff does an excellent job assisting with tours and excursions.
