Bottom Line

The 18-room Cranleigh is an upscale, adult-only boutique spread over a couple typical stone-built houses in the popular Lake District town of Bowness-on-Windermere. Individually designed rooms are beautifully finished with luxurious touches such as goose-down duvets and underfloor heating, while higher-end rooms even have whirlpool soaking tubs and bathroom TVs. There's not much beyond the rooms, a breakfast room, and cozy lounge, though guests have access to plush nearby spa facilities and the stunning lake and walking paths are just minutes away. Rates are pretty high, and a couple standard rooms lack polish, though this hotel is all about splashing out on a couple nights of romantic indulgence.

Cranleigh Boutique

Scene

A luxurious adult-only boutique

Part of a row of typical stone-built houses, it would be easy to drive past the Cranleigh Boutique without a clue that it's one of the most luxurious hotels in the area. Rooms are spread between two buildings and one extra special suite is in a separate bungalow. Inside, the vibe is instantly upscale with impeccably finished smart-yet-homey decor typified by its plump Chesterfield furnishings, plush wallpaper, and crystal chandeliers. The hotel's owners, Stephen and Louise, have made the focus of the hotel firmly on couples looking for an especially deluxe romantic escape (strictly no kids allowed) and it's even gained a reputation as a celebrity hideaway in recent years.

Location

Set on a relatively busy road in Bowness-on-Windermere minutes from the lake

The Cranleigh is set on a fairly busy road a few minutes' walk from the center of the sprawling tourist town of Bowness-on-Windermere in the picturesque Lake District. Stunning Lake Windermere is just a few minutes' away on foot, where visitors can take a lake cruise to the beautiful village of Ambleside or explore the scenic surrounds along numerous walking and hiking trails. Bowness town center has a wide selection of restaurants, shops, cafes, and bars, while the nearest train station is in the town of Windermere a mile and a half away.

Rooms

Superb, individually styled rooms with several levels of luxury

Each of the hotel's 18 rooms has been individually designed in a range of styles from cozy and homey to smart and sophisticated, immaculately finished with top quality fixtures and furnishings. In-room tech is also top-notch, with free and fast Wi-Fi, huge flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, and DVD players (with access to hundreds of DVDs) while bedding is goose-down duvets and cotton sheets. Bathrooms are also pretty special with Villeroy & Boch designer fittings, heated floors, mood lighting, and high-end toiletries, while some high-end rooms include bathroom TVs and even whirlpool tubs. For extreme indulgence, The Sanctuary is a detached bungalow with its own outdoor hot tub, a gigantic Ben de Lisi glass bath, surround sound system, and real fireplace. Some of the standard rooms, however, do lack the polish and panache of other rooms.

Features

Access to swanky nearby spa with pool, sauna, and steam room

Although there is no full restaurant, an excellent breakfast (included in the rate) with locally-sourced ingredients is served in the main building or can also be delivered to the room. There's aren't any spa or health facilities on-site either, though guests do have access to a £3 million refurbished spa located two minutes' walk away at the Macdonald Old England Hotel where a sauna, swimming pool, and steam room are all available as well as massage and beauty treatments. The hotel's lounge does provide a place to relax with a drink in front of an open fireplace, though rooms are so plush it's unlikely to get much use.
