Bottom Line

The three-pearl Ascos Coral Beach Hotel is a straightforward property with gorgeous Mediterranean Sea views and a private rocky beach. Located in a quiet area near Coral Bay, the hotel is less than a 10-minute walk from the busy center of town. The 203 rooms have simple decor and balconies, many overlooking the sea, but bathrooms are often dated and fees for Wi-Fi and safes add up. Features include an outdoor lagoon pool with a kiddy view and sea views, an indoor pool, and live entertainment. There are two restaurants serving buffet-style cuisine, and bars on the beach and by the pool. Guests seeking a more stylish all-inclusive property with free Wi-Fi could also consider the Azia Resort & Spa.

Ascos Coral Beach Hotel

Scene

Simple hotel with sea views and a rocky beach, for families and couples

The Ascos Coral Beach Hotel occupies a blocky white-painted building with bright blue balcony railings on each of the four floors. From this hillside location, the Mediterranean Sea is gorgeously showcased. Lounge chairs dotting the grassy grounds, and along the private rocky beach, are set up for optimal views. It's worth noting that everything here is on an incline -- downhill pathways lead to the beach, which could be tricky for guests with mobility issues. Inside, the lobby lounge is large, airy, and bright, with floor-to-ceiling windows and comfy beige furniture. The Artemis Cocktail Bar is similarly decorated with pale beige couches and armchairs, while the Athina restaurant's floor-to-ceiling windows offer lovely views of the pool and sea. The natural setting here outshines the ho-hum decor and fairly basic facilities, but the crowd of mostly families and couples enjoy the optional all-inclusive convenience and beach access.

Location

On the beach near Coral Bay's restaurants and shops

The Mediterranean Sea is the star of the show at the Ascos Coral Beach Hotel. The property sits on a quiet hillside on the west coast of Cyprus. Shops, bars, and restaurants on Coral Bay Avenue are just under 10 minutes away on foot, uphill. It's worth having a car to reach other destinations. The nightlife in Paphos is a 20-minute drive away. There are water-sports rentals at the hotel, and it's a three-minute drive or 15-minute walk to the sandy shores of Coral Bay Beach, where diving and boat trips are available. The Paphos Zoo is a 15-minute drive from the hotel. Major sights such as Paphos Archaeological Park, Paphos Castle, and Tombs of the Kings are within 20 to 30 minutes by car. Paphos International Airport can be reached in 30 to 40 minutes by car.

Rooms

Spare rooms with mini-fridges and balconies, some with sea views

Rooms at the Ascos Coral Beach Hotel are simple and spare with very little in the way of decoration. There are basic wood furnishings such as desks and metal-accented headboards. Walls and bedding are in shades of cream and white. Striped accent pillows, antique-style sconces, and framed artwork in Mediterranean-blue shades are pleasant but unmemorable. What sets some of these rooms apart -- especially those on upper floors -- are balconies with beautiful views of the sea. Other balconies face the land, pool, or offer only partial sea views. Family and Twin Rooms have double or twin-size beds; bunk beds and sofa beds are available. Each room has a tiny 22-inch flat-screen TV, coffee/tea facilities, and mini-fridge. There are fees for in-room Wi-Fi and safes. Bathrooms have a dated look, with mildew often visible around shower/tub combos. Toiletries and hairdryers are provided.

Features

Attractive outdoor pool, loads of leisure activities, and multiple dining options and bars

The position of the Ascos Coral Beach Hotel allows for sea views from the lagoon pool and kiddy pool that are surrounded by palm trees. There's also the beach, of course, and provisions for a classic beach day are for sale in the market in the lobby.

Plenty of activities are available for kids and adults, including live evening entertainment and a kids' club. Down on the beach, there are a playground, bocce ball, and water-sports rentals. A games room, poolside billiard table, tennis court, and everything from bingo to Pilates are available, too. The hotel also has an indoor pool in a space with large windows and a hot tub. A sauna and a gym with old equipment are also inside.

There is a themed buffet restaurant, Athina Dining Room, serving all meals. In the lobby there's a large cocktail bar, Artemis, with a sprawling terrace. A more casual poolside snack bar, and cocktail bars by the pool and on the beach are also available to guests. All-inclusive options and room service are offered.
