Bottom Line

The mid-range Louis Phaethon Beach, outside Cyprus’ coastal town of Paphos, is a family-friendly resort with plenty to do for all ages. The water park is a highlight of the kids’ facilities -- which includes a mini-club -- but the rocky beach is disappointing. Meanwhile, parents can take advantage of the spa offering massages and facilities like a steam room and gym. All-inclusive dining at the buffet restaurant is good, plus there’s an Asian restaurant open in peak season. The 422 rooms are small and simple with mini-fridges, flat-screen TVs, and kettles, plus an option for two sofa beds to accommodate kids. For something closer to town, check out Amphora Hotel & Suites, where modern rooms and a nicer beach are pluses, but the kids’ facilities are less extensive.

Solid family-friendly resort with appealing common areas and well-tended grounds

This all-inclusive beach resort shines for its grounds and long list of on-site options for activities and relaxation. The hotel is very family-friendly thanks to entertainment, facilities, and menus designed for children. Guests without kids may be put off by their energy level, but there are quieter areas to relax, like the spa and a second pool. Grounds are lovely, with well-tended gardens, lawns, and trees providing a beautiful environment. Interior spaces are less impressive, especially guest rooms, but updates have kept common areas fresh. The lobby is an attractive spot with soaring ceilings and large windows to make the space feel open and bright, plus greenery dripping from upper-floor railings give the space a warmer atmosphere. a couple of statues and planters done in ancient styles are a reminder of the history of Cyprus.

Location

In quiet area outside Paphos; at least a 10-minute drive to sites

Louis Phaethon Beach is in Paphos, a city on the southwestern shore of the island of Cyprus. It is outside the populated areas of town, with open fields across the road and other hotels nearby along the shoreline. The coast is rocky in this area, but an 11-minute walk -- or two-minute drive -- away there is a pebbly beach with easier access to the water. It is a 12-minute walk to a fun water park with a lazy river and a wave pool. There’s a public bus stop directly in front of the hotel for trips farther afield.

The hotel is a 15-minute drive from the center of Paphos, but many areas of interest lie along the coast. Paphos Archaeological Park is a historic ruin spread over a large area with several buildings to explore, including a fortress, houses, and a tomb, and is a 10-minute drive from the hotel. It is also an 11-minute drive to Paphos’ harbor, a walkable area with shops and restaurants. Paphos International Airport is a 15-minute drive from the hotel.

Rooms

Small but clean rooms are simply appointed with a mini-fridge and flat-screen TV.

Standard rooms are basic, but clean and well-kept. At 200 square feet (19 square meters), the double bed (or two singles), couch, and desk take up most of the space. Family Rooms add two sofa beds for up to four guests. Wood floors and furniture with white and light-blue fabrics set against cream-colored walls create a warm atmosphere. Still, generic artwork, modest furniture, and little embellishment give it a simple feel. Rooms have either a furnished balcony or terrace, and some have lovely sea views.

Bathrooms are tight, with room for just one person at a time, which can be difficult for families. They're equipped with a shower or curtained shower/tub combo, and some counter space for guests’ toiletries. Hairdryers are provided and there are dispensers with free soap and shampoo. All rooms have a flat-screen TV, mini-fridge, kettle, and a safe (for a fee). There are no irons provided; guests must use the laundry service.

Features

Two restaurants, two outdoor pools, a water park, and spa

The main buffet restaurant serves the three meals included on the all-inclusive plan. The food is good, with variety in meal options -- a different theme each night -- and quality offerings. There’s also a second restaurant, open in the busy season, serving Asian cuisine. Cafe Vienna offers drinks and pastries in a large, bar-like room off the lobby. An on-site club has disco music and dancing at night.

There are two outdoor pools to choose from, each with plenty of free sunbeds under umbrellas. One is attached to the water park, and with music, activities, and children playing, it can get noisy. The second pool is large and has a quieter atmosphere. Palm trees and the nearby pool bar make it a nicer spot to unwind. The beach is narrow and rocky, with stairs to access the water; it is a pretty spot, but not the typical sandy strip beachgoers seek. Beach towels are not provided by the hotel.

A relaxing spa offers massages and beauty treatments in a lovely facility with an indoor pool -- heated in cooler months -- plus a sauna, steam room, and whirlpool. The fitness area has a good range of equipment, though the space looks a bit worn and utilitarian. Tennis and badminton courts, plus organized activities during the day, give guests plenty of choice in things to do. For children, the water park has slides and fountains, plus a shallow area with toys for younger children. Kids can also take advantage of a game room with table games and coin-operated video games, a playground, and a mini-club with indoor play space. Wi-Fi is free in the lobby, but there is a fee to access it throughout the rest of the property.
