Bottom Line

Zaton Holiday Resort is a three-pearl property that offers four different types of stays for a beach holiday: campsites, glamping, mobile homes, and apartments. Set on a private beach (which is reportedly rocky), there’s a busy social atmosphere here thanks to daily and nightly entertainment, lots of sports activities, and kids’ clubs. Though there’s plenty to do around the 10 pools and lots to eat at the restaurants and pool bars, expect long lines at buffets and pesky fees for some services like sun loungers and beach umbrellas. Families who prefer a quieter atmosphere might consider Falkensteiner Family Hotel Diadora which lacks the lounger fees, has a traditional gym, and pleasant design.

Zaton Holiday Resort

Scene

Large property with a family-friendly vibe

The Zaton Holiday Resort’s large property and long list of amenities wows at first sight. However, it’s not aesthetically striking overall. The apartments, campsites, and mobile homes are a hodgepodge of different types of buildings spread out among the grassy and tree-filled property. The lobby is quite simple with white floors and walls and red or black modern chairs. The main action centers around the beach and pool areas, which are home to music and activities, hundreds of loungers, several bars, and (unsurprisingly) lots of people. The resort is crowded and busy, especially since it allows outside guests to visit for a daily entrance fee. Families are most attracted to this property for the available activities and units or campsites that range from affordable to a bit pricey. However, guests should be aware that some wear and tear and many extra fees (sun loungers, beach umbrellas, and sports activities), may make guests feel nickel-and-dimed.

Location

Beachfront property and a six-minute drive from the airport

The hotel is located along a beach-y coast of Zadar County in Croatia. The property covers a lot of space, so guests are unable to walk elsewhere for things to do, see, or eat. The location does make for easy access to the Zracna luka Zadar-Zaton Airport which is a six-minute drive away. An 18-minute drive will take travelers to the city of Zadar which is filled with diverse dining options, historical attractions of the Roman area, and plenty of shopping. The small town of Nin is a bit closer, at a seven-minute drive away.

Rooms

Campsites and glamp sites with full facilities; mobile homes and apartments with kitchenettes

Zaton Holiday Resort offers rooms to fit most budgets from apartments to mobile homes, and campsites. The campsites are for the budget-friendly travelers and include 1,000 pitches with electricity, water, and sewage hookups for mobile homes or tents. It also includes washrooms, showers, laundry rooms, and outdoor barbecue areas for guests to interact. For a more upscale camping experience, there are stylish glamp sites with safari-like tents with a distressed, but chic, interior design. With satellite TVs, gas cooker, microwaves, coffeemakers, and mini-fridges, these glamping tents offer all the modernity of hotel rooms except for air-conditioning.

For those who like privacy, mobile homes or apartments are the way to go. Air-conditioning is provided in all units, except the Three-Star Apartments. Mobile homes have a basic IKEA-like design with simple blond-wood laminate furniture and pops of color in decorative accents like cabinets or curtains. Though they offer small kitchenettes, many have dated aspects like tube-style TVs. The apartments vary widely in decor (and datedness) though most are neutral in color or have earthen tones of brown and red. Though kitchenettes and balconies are great perks to the apartments, the fact that many of them only feature sofa beds as the main bed is a bit odd.

Wi-Fi is free in rooms, but there’s varying reports about its quality, especially in the campsites. Housekeeping is not daily -- bed linen is changed every seven days and towels are changed twice a week.

Features

Swimming at the beach and pools, plus daily entertainment at a close second

As a family-friendly resort, there’s a lot to do here, but things like pesky fees diminish the atmosphere a bit. The best feature of the hotel is the private beach, which has been set up with beach snack bars and disability access. The water is shallow, yet a bit rocky. The hotel is pet-friendly (for a fee) and there are parts of the beach where pets are allowed. The hotel has children’s pools, a spray park, and pool bars. Two of the 10 pools on-site were renovated in 2017. Unfortunately, there’s a fee for sun loungers and beach umbrellas.

Outdoor activities are plentiful here, with sports courts like volleyball and basketball, as well as horseback riding, mini-golf, and tennis (many of which cost a fee to participate). The hotel lacks a traditional gym, but rather has a track with outdoor workout devices. Families are entertained in multiple ways such as with day entertainment and shows, kids’ clubs for different ages, and children’s playgrounds.

Dining needs begin with a free hot and cold breakfast buffet. Half-board options are available in the restaurants and snack bars that serve local and international cuisine. Reports on food quality vary.

There are boutiques, grocery store, massages, and a salon -- but these services can be quite pricey compared to what you’d find off-site. Parking and Wi-Fi are free, though only one Wi-Fi code is provided per booked room.
