Bottom Line

The Lodge at Deadwood is an upper-middle-range hotel with a large on-site casino, a waterpark-like indoor pool, and two restaurants, as well as a fitness room. Its 140 rooms and suites are modern and homey, with flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi, plus some have private patios or decks. It’s a bit outside of the center of Deadwood -- a five-minute drive or a trolley ride to city attractions -- but the location is ideal for those in search of a bit more quiet. Travelers looking to be closer to town and attractions might want to consider the Deadwood Mountain Grand Hotel, which offers similar rates.

The Lodge at Deadwood

Scene

Handsome hotel with eye-catching blend of antique, local, and modern style

True to its name, the hotel has a lodge-like exterior with a wood and stone entrance that makes way for interiors that are traditional -- expect lots of marble and wood -- but have eye-catching design elements that add a touch of grandeur. The lobby features beautiful woodwork on the ceilings and a sun pattern in the marble floors as well as patterned carpets. Handsome antique pieces are set throughout the common areas and clusters of armchairs sit beneath contemporary abstract art. There's plenty to occupy guests on-site, and the atmosphere is lively. The on-site Deadwood Grille steak house has a sophisticated Western vibe, with lots of wood, stone walls, and a tall stone fireplace for a cozy vibe -- it's popular with guests of the hotel and others visiting Deadwood. The indoor pool is definitely intended for families with children -- there's a pirate ship with slides and other play equipment throughout the area -- though other hotel amenities, like the casino, also attract couples and leisure tourists to the hotel.

Location

Outside Deadwood, a five-minute drive or trolley ride to town center

The hotel sits atop a hill off one of the main roads leading into Deadwood. Local attractions include Adams House, a historic mansion, and Mount Moriah Cemetery, where Wild West folk heroes Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane are buried. Situated in a peaceful location surrounded by trees, it’s a five-minute drive to the center of the city and guests can also utilize the city trolley that runs regularly into town (though it's less frequent at night). The immediate area doesn't have much of interest within walking distance. It’s an hour and 15 minutes to Mount Rushmore by car, and Rapid City Regional Airport is an hour away.

Rooms

Modern, homey rooms with up-to-date amenities

The 140 rooms and suites are pleasant and homey, with a modern look done in an earth-tone palette that includes brown chenille comforters on the beds. Solid light wood furniture looks sharp alongside and leather armchairs and love seats with Native American-patterned fabric accents. Rooms have brown and tan patterned carpets and a nice amount of abstract wall art on tan walls. There are a variety of room configurations, and the Spa Suite is a particularly decked-out choice, with impressive antique pieces, tasteful sculptures, a separate bedroom, heavy dark hardwood furniture, a kitchen, and a fireplace. Spacious bathrooms have attractive stone-colored tile, with long vanities and curtained shower/tub combos. All rooms have flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, work desks, and free Wi-Fi, while some suites add mini-fridges, microwaves, and fireplaces. Many rooms also have private patios or decks.

Both are popular choices with hotel guests and those staying in town. Room service is available, but breakfast is not included in standard room rates. The indoor pool is a water park-like complex that includes various slides and fountains. There is a separate hot tub, but no pool only for adults. A small fitness room has a basic selection of cardio and weight machines.
