Bottom Line

This upper-middle-range hotel in downtown Denver is housed in a historic building, but inside, it's stylish and contemporary. The 297 rooms all come with flat-screen LED TVs, coffee- and tea-making facilities, work desks, and handsome, contemporary decor. The hotel offers some great freebies, including a nightly cookies and milk bar, a 24-hour fitness center, downtown shuttle service, and property-wide Wi-Fi. There is no pool, however; for that, try Hilton Garden Inn Denver Downtown.

Magnolia Hotel Denver, A Tribute Portfolio Hotel

Scene

Modern and stylish, with historic touches

Magnolia Hotel Denver, A Tribute Portfolio Hotel may be housed in a former bank building that dates to 1911, but inside, the decor is thoroughly modern and stylish. A few subtle touches allude to the hotel's past, such as black-and-white photographs showing the building in the early 1900s. A multi-million-dollar renovation in late 2008 revitalized the Magnolia, and the hotel has continued its improvements: Throughout 2015, the Magnolia refurbished all of its rooms and added 54 new rooms and boardroom suites; and the hotel renovated its lobby, restaurant, and fitness center in 2017.

In downtown Denver, within walking distance of the city's major attractions

Although the Magnolia is in the heart of downtown, its set-back street entrance creates a feeling of seclusion. Various major hotels, including Hilton Garden Inn and Hyatt Regency, are nearby as well. Other attractions in the vicinity include the Denver Mint, the State Capitol Building, Coors Field, and numerous restaurants and microbreweries, for which Denver is famous.

Rooms

Modern, mostly white decor

Rooms at the Magnolia begin at 350 square feet (and suites begin at 700 square feet). In 2015, the hotel renovated every unit and added 54 rooms and boardroom suites. Rooms are stylishly decorated with modern decor that includes white tufted headboards, sleek black work desks with white ergonomic chairs, and pale gray armchairs. There are 37- or 42-inch flat-screen LED TVs, coffee- and tea-making facilities, and plush beds with Simmons Beautyrest mattresses. Bathrooms vary a bit; all have custom-made porcelain sinks, back-lit makeup mirrors, bathrobes, and Lather bath products in refillable bottles, but some have cool dark-marble walk-in showers and others large oval tubs with recessed lighting.

Suites offer separate living areas with sofas and dining room tables, and (on the upper floors) gas fireplaces. The 750-square-feet Presidential King Suite features a full kitchen. Wi-Fi is free in all rooms. Cribs, cots, extra beds, and playpens are available upon request.

Features

Great freebies and a solid fitness center, but no on-site pool or spa

The hotel offers great perks, including a free cookie and milk reception every night, free Wi-Fi, free car service, and a solid 24-hour fitness center with mood lighting. But there is no pool or spa.

The grand Magnolia Ballroom is a notable feature of the hotel. The venue is located across the street from the main building, in the former United States National Bank. The 3,500-square-foot space features a 25-foot glass atrium ceiling, huge columns, and a hanging glass chandelier. There is also a separate bar and kitchen. The ballroom hosts wine tastings, business meetings, and wedding receptions for up to 250 people.

Harry's Bar & Grille, in the hotel's lobby, offers bistro-style fare for lunch and dinner, plus cocktails, local beer, and wines. An especially appealing part of the hotel is the underground Magnolia Lounge, with its rock-and-waterfall display. The sound of the running water, combined with the lounge's low ceilings and dim lighting, helps to create a relaxing, intimate atmosphere. The Magnolia Lounge has billiards, bar, and dinner menu.
