Casa Coson

The decor blends traditional Spanish Colonial architecture with vibrant splashes of Caribbean decor. Look for white stucco walls, thatched roofs, and sweeping balconies plus bright art work throughout. The relaxed vibe is defined by the well-manicured garden, grounds, and lovely Playa Coson beach. The tiny property offers more than enough hammocks, open-air gazebos, and lounge chairs spread liberally from the pool to the garden to the beach. By night, the on-site restaurant bar serves as the hotel’s laid-back, yet convivial social hub. The majority of guests here are couples, though kids and families are a common sight too. 

Casa Coson is situated on a private, pristine beach that’s regarded as one of the most beautiful in Samana province. The town of Las Terrenas is 15 minutes from the hotel by car and offers ample opportunities for shopping, bar hopping, and dining.

The hotel is 20 minutes by car to Samana El Catey International Airport. Not surprisingly, no on-site hotel shuttle is offered to and from the airport. Private shuttle transfer is available and is a wise choice for larger groups, as rates are typically determined per vehicle. Airport taxis are readily available and can prove to be a more affordable option. Tourists should always be cautious of private cab drivers and agree on a fixed price for their fare in advance.

Travelers flying into Las Americas International in Santo Domingo will likely want to rent a car to make the two-hour drive to Casa Coson. Take note that tolls on the tourist road from the airport to Las Terrenas run in excess of 50 U.S. dollars roundtrip and must be paid in pesos. The final two-kilometer stretch of road before the hotel is rough and may be difficult for smaller, economy cars. Free self-parking is available in a secure, private lot which is especially nice given the hotel’s somewhat remote, rural location.

Rooms at Casa Coson range from Standard Rooms with garden views to larger suites and spacious Casita guest houses with full kitchens, and dedicated dining and living areas. The eclectic Colonial-meets-Caribbean decor throughout the property is carried through to the rooms, providing a vibe that’s funky and kitschy.

Standard Rooms sleep between two to three guests and the nightly rate varies accordingly. The sparsely decorated and furnished spaces are minimal by most Western standards, however, the rooms are clean and well-maintained. They feature a mini-fridge, air-conditioning (available for an additional daily fee due to the area’s stratospheric energy costs), and a private balcony or terrace with the best ocean views on the property. In order to maintain the relaxed, beachfront vibe, children under 12 are not allowed in any of the Standard Rooms.

All three Casitas are set back from the beach, and don't have ocean views. These larger guest houses sleep between four and six people and, again, the nightly rate varies accordingly. Each space provides a full kitchen (with dishes, glassware, and cookware), multiple bedrooms, a dedicated dining area, and a large, separate living space. Fans are provided in all sleeping spaces. None of the rooms have Wi-Fi access.

Bathrooms in all guest rooms, suites, and Casitas are bright and clean with glass fixtures and modern appliances. Most feature windows, removable shower heads, and stand-up shower stalls. No room, except for the largest Suite del Sueno, offers a dedicated bathtub. 

Casa Coson provides only the amenities essential to a proper beach getaway. There is no fitness center, dedicated spa, or business center, and free Wi-Fi is limited to the lobby area. However, the hotel provides a pristine, private beach, water view massage hut, morning yoga sessions, and a small, but well-maintained pool and lounge area.

The on-site restaurant is open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and the bar serves as a social hub throughout the day. A continental breakfast is included in all room rates and offers a largely homemade selection. Specific options vary each day but typically include local fruits (such as papayas, mangoes, passionfruit, and berries), fresh breads, pastries, and coffee. For an added fee, the staff can also prepare more deluxe options like yogurt, bacon, and eggs to order. Lunch is available with per-person rates typical of a beach hotel. The courses of each day’s three-course “surprise” dinner are not revealed to the guest until actually served. Unfortunately, this prix fixe service is substantially more expensive than many comparable restaurants in Las Terrenas.

The hotel does not offer any outside excursions directly. However their concierge service contracts with local third party vendors to arrange activities, such as kayaking, ATV rides, horseback riding, and area tours.
