Bottom Line

Set on Santo Domingo’s seaside, the upscale Crowne Plaza is predominantly a business hotel with a polished modern aesthetic. Its 197 rooms and suites are large, tastefully decorated, and equipped with minibars, coffeemakers, and big marble bathrooms. A turndown service with aromatherapy sleepy-time packs is a nice touch. While the pool isn’t huge, it’s beautiful and contemporary with seaside views, a chic pool bar, and a huge sundeck. Stylish Nabu restaurant serves a great buffet breakfast (though it’s not necessarily included in the rate), and other attributes include a spa, an excellent fitness center, extensive business facilities, and a casino. Guests (many regulars) appreciate the consistency and generally find the amenities here top-notch. Travelers seeking a polished hotel with more of a resort feel could try the nearby Renaissance

Crowne Plaza Santo Domingo

Scene

Polished and business-like with chic boutique contrast in leisure amenities, like the pool

Like many large-scale Santo Domingo Hotels, the Crowne Plaza sits right opposite the Caribbean Sea, which provides a welcome natural contrast to the city setting. Built in the '90s, its 15-story beige tower feels business-like from the get go. Two suited check-in staff man the bold black reception desk, while the expansive marble-tiled lobby has a series of conservative lounge settings in burnt orange and tamarind brown. The Crowne Plaza Santo Domingo aesthetic echoes its polished, big-name reputation. The property naturally attracts business travelers for its urban location and extensive business amenities, but leisure travelers aren’t absent. Features such as the fitness center and pool take the vibe in a more boutique, resort-like direction. Aqua, white, and driftwood gray feel fresh for an urban gym, and the color scheme continues in the chic pool area, where glass balustrade highlights the sea backdrop over the road. An expansive deck scattered with sunbeds and palapa umbrellas add a fun island touch. Nabu restaurant is a pleasant surprise with its elegantly dressed tables complete with red anthurium pot plants that bring a bit of nature indoors. The expansive layout throughout this property paired with its moderate number of rooms means this hotel rarely feels crowded.

Rooms

Spacious and nicely decorated with minibars, coffeemakers, and many with sea views

Guest rooms at this Crowne Plaza are huge and hint at its city seaside location. White, cream, and dark chocolate brown make up the conservative color palettes, with turquoise seating and bold yellow feature walls that add beachy contrast. Matching modern furniture, drum lamp lighting, and comfortable beds populate spaces, along with big work desks and ergonomic chairs. Tech features include iPod docks, flat-screen TVs, and ample plug-in outlets. Minibars and coffeemakers are also provided, and sleepy-time aromatherapy kits delivered with turndown service are a nice touch. Like rooms, bathrooms are generously sized -- dressed in red and beige marble, with huge mirrors, bidets, shower/tub combos, hairdryers, and free toiletries. Many rooms have sea views, higher categories have balconies, and suites add spacious living areas to layouts. Club Rooms have access to the Club Level with free snacks and perks.

A gorgeous pool, stylish restaurant, casino, modern fitness center, spa, and extensive events facilities

Crowne Plaza checks just about all of the boxes when it comes to features for an upscale, business-oriented hotel. The outdoor pool is a big highlight. It sits between an expansive sundeck that overlooks the sea across the road, and chic Las Olas Pool Bar. The fitness center is appealing as well. It's modern and state-of-the-art with a solid section of cardio- and weight-training equipment. For post-workout pampering, the on-site spa offers a range of treatments that includes hydrotherapy, massages, and body wraps. Dining is equally extensive: Nabu restaurant is a stylish space serving a solid buffet breakfast, plus lunch and dinner. There’s also a lobby bar, Level 1, and Kaffetto’s cafe, serving espresso coffee and snacks, also in the lobby. Room service is available around the clock, too. Also operating 24 hours is the business center, and free Wi-Fi is provided. The hotel’s 15 meeting rooms can accommodate up to 1,200 people for all manner of events and functions. Those looking to gamble can access the on-site casino through the lobby. Self-parking is free, while valet incurs a fee, as does babysitting services.
