Bottom Line

The Edgewater Resort is a mid-range hotel across the street from its own private stretch of shoreline in downtown Ephraim. Many of its rooms overlook the bay and the hotel also offers suites with full kitchens and private cottages tucked away in the backyard. On weekends, the adjacent Old Post Office restaurant makes use of a communal fire pit for its notorious fish boils, a Door County tradition steeped in Scandinavian ancestry and generous amounts of kerosene. The hotel is particularly suited for couples and families who plan on experiencing the unique outdoor dinner. It's also worth checking the nearby The Eagle Harbor Inn, which has some similar amenities, along with free breakfast.

Edgewater Resort

Scene

Classic, relaxed waterfront hotel

Built in 1900, the Edgewater Resort is the kind of classic Door County property that looks like it could have been plucked right out of New England. Its white facade and long verandas face the bay across manicured lawns. The quaint lobby has a small front desk, with the usual multitude of brochures and Door County dining guides covering most available surfaces. Painted wood and blue wicker furniture sit around a stone fireplace, adorned with a wooden sailboat. Most guests are vacationing families and couples.

Location

Across the street from the bay, central to dining and attractions

Right across the street from its own private waterfront, the Edgewater Resort is centrally located in Ephraim next to the Old Post Office restaurant. Other Ephraim restaurants are within walking distance, but guests should note that there are no bars here, as the property is located in the state's last dry municipality. For watering holes and additional dining options, guests can head to neighboring Sister Bay or Fish Creek, a few minutes’ drive away. The Northern Sky Theater is a three-minute drive and Peninsula State Park, which includes a golf course, is about a 10-minute drive, while Potawatomi State Park is close to an hour away. Austin Straubel International Airport in Green Bay is a 90-minute drive, and General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee is a little more than a three-hour drive from the hotel.

The Traditional Rooms are on the small side, but microwaves, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers come standard, as do flat-screen TVs. Pastel bathrooms have shower/tub combos. Suites add in-room whirlpool tubs, gas fireplaces, and full kitchens with ovens and breakfast bars. Cottages range from simple studios to one- or two-bedroom options. The larger cottages have gas fireplaces, and kitchenettes, or full kitchens. Pets are welcome in the cottages, for a fee.
