Bottom Line

Decor in the Dublin Skylon Hotel is pleasant -- if a bit generic; spacious, clean rooms offer warm lighting, crisp bedding, and dark red walls. Room amenities include flat-screen TVs and electric kettles. Some rooms can accommodate groups or families with multiple twin beds. Wi-Fi is free and bathrooms are surprisingly large. The common spaces are the highlight here, though: The big, modern lobby has lots of plush couches and the cozy bar/grill has a nice fireplace. This 126-room hotel is a good budget pick near the airport in Dublin.

Dublin Skylon Hotel

Location

North of the city center near the airport with good bus service nearby

Though the Dublin Skylon Hotel is about 10 minutes north of the center of Dublin, it sits on a major bus line that runs directly through the center of town. That being said, the neighborhood surrounding the hotel is pretty residential and isolated. Guests won't be wandering out the door in the morning to stumble on a cute coffee shop. The location however is convenient for the airport and offers good value for money.

Dublin has changed dramatically in the last 15 years. First there was the boom of the Celtic Tiger that brought great development and growth to the city. As a result of this wave of wealth, the city now has a cosmopolitan feel that it never had before. Since the economic bust, restaurants and hotels have generally retained the same quality, but the city in general is less expensive. Dublin has beautiful gardens, museums, and theaters, but it is the everyday things in the Irish capital -- like sitting in a local pub and having a pint -- that are a high point for many visitors.

  • 12-minute drive to Dublin Airport
  • 5-minute drive to the National Botanic Gardens
  • 5-minute drive to St. Patrick's Cathedral
  • 6-minute drive to Moore Street food market
  • 10-minute drive to Trinity College
  • 10-minute drive to Christ Church Cathedral
  • 11-minute drive to Guinness Storehouse
  • 11-minute drive to St. Stephen's Green
  • 11-minute drive to Glasnevin Cemetery
  • 12-minute drive to Baggot Street, home to several local pubs
  • 14-minute drive to Kilmainham Gaol, a former prison, now museum
  • 15-minute drive to Irish Museum of Modern Art
  • 17-minute drive to Dublin Bay
  • 2-hour drive to Belfast
