Bottom Line

Located on Lapad Bay, the three-pearl Hotel Splendid is a seasonal property with a garden that leads down to a private beach. It's within walking distance of the bustling Lapad Bay promenade, but far from Dubrovnik's historic center. The 59 guest rooms are tidy and spacious, and all have balconies, most with beautiful sea views. Decor is dated, though, and other than the AC, minibars, and free Wi-Fi, in-room amenities are limited, and some have old tube-style TVs. A buffet breakfast is included in the room rate, but it gets mixed reviews. There's also a garden restaurant, a hotel bar, and a beach bar. Half-board options are available. But there's no gym on-site, and sunbeds and umbrellas for the beach cost an extra. Also, the hotel doesn't have an elevator. For more modern decor and better amenities, travelers can consider Hotel Uvala -- a bit pricer, but perhaps a better value.

Hotel Splendid

Scene

Older but well-maintained seaside hotel for vacationing couples

Hotel Splendid is one of the area's older hotels, dating back to 1963, and last renovated in 1997. The bulk of the building is white stucco, with rows of windows on one side, and a balcony-filled facade on the other, overlooking the sea. The lobby shows its age, but isn't without character, featuring a wavy wood reception desk, faux stone accent walls, and a carpeted seating area with armchairs and couches in dated red upholstery. A few plants and floor-to-ceiling windows enhance the space, which opens up to a large terrace overlooking the hotel's gardens and the sea. The hotel has no elevator or pool, but the major draw here is access to a private swimming and rocky beach area. With mostly double rooms, vacationing couples are primary clientele during the tourist season when the hotel is opened.

Location

Scenic beachside location on the Lapad peninsula

The hotel is located on the Lapad peninsula in a residential area northwest of the historic Old Town, just a minute's walk to a private swimming area with a concrete jetty and a pebbly strip of beach. About an eight-minute walk from the hotel is the scenic Lapad Bay promenade, which extends along the edge of the peninsula and features many restaurants, bars, and cafes; it's frequented by tourists and local residents alike. It would be a hike on foot to Dubrovnik's Old Town (45 minutes or more), but bus No. 4 has a stop near the hotel and runs regularly, and reaching the city center is about a 20-minute ride. Dubrovnik Airport is about a 30-minute drive.

Rooms

Outdated but roomy, with minibars and balconies, most with sea views

Hotel Splendid's 59 guest rooms are tidy and spacious, though decor is bland and dated. The newer wood flooring that has replaced carpeting is a nice touch, but the caramel-colored wood furniture, beige upholstery, and pastel-pink bedding lend a 70s air. Wear-and-tear may be evident, but guests generally find the rooms clean and comfortable. Double glass doors open onto the balconies, filling the rooms with natural light, and pieces of local art that hanging over the beds add flair. The majority of rooms are doubles and twins, with a few single rooms and a handful of triples with sofa beds and separate balconies. All rooms have balconies, most with views of the sea and the hotel's garden, though some catch glimpses of the parking lot.

All units have AC and feature minibars and free Wi-Fi (though some guests have complained that service is spotty), but they lack kettles. Small, tube-style TVs are standard, but flat-screen TVs are found in some of the upgraded rooms. Bathrooms, decked out in white-and-rose vitrified tiling, are on the small side, and have shower/tub combos or stall showers, but old, wall-mounted tube-style hairdryers and no toiletries are provided.

The hotel offers a free breakfast buffet, which includes a selection of standards -- breads, cereals, fresh fruit, and yogurt, plus hot dishes like eggs and sausage. Dinner is also served buffet-style, and guests can opt for a half-board option, though the food gets mixed reviews. Alfresco dining is offered on a pleasant patio overlooking the sea.
