Bottom Line

The 123-room Comfort Suites Canal Park is a homey hotel set directly on the shores of Lake Superior within view of Aerial Lift Bridge. This property offers the calm panorama of the water, access to walking paths alongside the lake, and close proximity to the restaurants, boutiques, and public spaces of the lively warehouse district of Canal Park in downtown Duluth. The rooms are mid-range and a touch generic, though some do have nice extras including fireplaces and balconies. Some guests have noted that the hotel frequently hosts groups such as sports teams and conferences, which can result in nighttime noise. Breakfast is free and there are a nice indoor pool, fitness center, and business center on-site.

Comfort Suites Canal Park

Scene

Relaxing and peaceful lakeside hotel, with cozy spots for lounging

Wood paneling and flagstone throughout the Comfort Suites Canal Park contributes to a cozy, inviting aesthetic. The slightly eclectic lobby has a few shaker-style stained glass lamps and wood-frame couches, which combine with hand-drawn cartoon characters on the windows for a somewhat bizarre, if homey, vibe. The rooms are laid out in a chain of three-story, clapboard structures directly overlooking Lake Superior. The views and lakeside location give the property an overall relaxed atmosphere.

Location

Near the end of Canal Park, within walking distance of a number of restaurants and shops

The hotel is situated a few steps from Lake Superior and enjoys views both of the water and of the Aerial Lift Bridge, a major Duluth landmark and a working bridge built in the early 20th century that spans the Duluth Ship Canal. The downtown area surrounding the hotel and the bridge is a revitalized shopping district of Duluth that enjoys walking paths along the lake, a plethora of public gardens, shops, and restaurants, all within a few minutes walk of the property’s waterfront location.

Rooms

Rooms are decorated in taupe and neutral shades, with comfortable beds

The wood furniture here -- including bedside tables, bed frames, and chests of drawers --  is a bit worn, but one step up from standard lacquer hotel room fare. While nothing extraordinary in the way of aesthetics, the rooms offer a pleasing combination of earth tone textiles in the carpets, bed throws, and curtains, for a calm visual feel. Some guests have noted the ironing board takes up half the space in the standalone closet. Bathrooms typically have a shower/tub combo handsomely tiled in brown flagstone; the rest of the bathroom is fairly standard-issue, on the small side, and with a normal-sized granite vanity. All rooms have an iron and ironing board, a safe, a work desk, an outlet with three-prong plugs and USB inputs, a microwave, mini-fridge, and coffeemaker. Some, though not all, lake-facing rooms have a balcony; some also have a fireplace that can be accessed from three sides, and yet others have soaking tubs in the sleep area. In larger rooms, the living and sleeping areas are often separated by a partial wall.
