24 Royal Terrace

First opened in 2015, the 24 Royal Terrace is part hotel and part art gallery. Walls are covered with dozens of contemporary works of art, from big mural paintings to pieces that fit into one hand, and the original architectural elements of the building -- in particular its soaring ceilings, arched doorways, and ornate moldings -- make the property feel like the halls of a grand museum. Reception is compact, housing just a small front desk and a chair, but its checkered floors are eye-catching, and the charming, red-carpeted staircase, taupe walls, and big, double doors add elegance and style. The bar, which is the only other common space here, has a similar feel, with a sophisticated combination of modern and more classic elements, including a backlit bar, crushed velvet chairs in purple and golden hues, and delicate ceiling and wall moldings.

The hotel’s many different room types, upscale amenities, and central location draw a mixed crowd of couples, business travelers, and groups, but the atmosphere is usually quiet and relaxing. Travelers seeking something similar with a few more on-site amenities may want to compare rates at The Bonham, while the beautiful Old Town Chambers is a good alternative for those wanting the comforts of an apartment right off the Royal Mile. The Ibis Styles Edinburgh Centre St Andrew Square is a cheaper option also within walking distance of the city's action.  

Named after its address, the 24 Royal Terrace is located in a quiet but central part of Edinburgh. The fastest way to get to the center is by crossing through Calton Hill, a lovely (but hilly) park home to several historic sights and with some of the best views around. This puts guests just a 10-minute walk from shopping along Princes Street and from all of the attractions in the New Town, including Scott Monument and the Scottish National Gallery. Waverley Station -- Edinburgh’s main transportation hub -- is also just about 10 minutes on foot from the hotel, as are the airport buses and trams. The Royal Mile, St Giles’ Cathedral, and Edinburgh Castle are each about a 20-minute walk away, and there are several bus stops within three blocks of the hotel. The airport is about a 35-minute drive away. 

The hotel has 16 rooms, all decorated in a sophisticated style that combines the classic architectural and ornamental elements of the building with more modern touches. Heavy wooden armoires, white wainscoting, and soaring ceilings with moldings tie in well with more contemporary touches such as large suede tufted headboards and striking wallpaper. Big windows and soft carpets in neutral hues make rooms feel cozy and inviting. The vast majority of rooms are bigger than the average standard room in Edinburgh, but single rooms are tiny and are best suited to business travelers in town for a night or two. These units also have a more subdued decor style, with big, black office chairs, spacious desks with reading lamps, and clean lines throughout. 

Rooms are outfitted with a wonderful array of upscale amenities, such as smart TVs, Bluetooth speakers, free high-speed Wi-Fi, USB charging points, and soft Egyptian cotton linens. Robes, slippers, and coffeemakers with free tea and coffee (replenished daily) are also provided in all rooms. Bathrooms are compact, albeit spotless, with checkered floors, pedestal sinks in most, and walk-in showers. Some upgraded units add striking stand-alone clawfoot tubs behind screens or regular tubs in addition to showers. Professional hairdryers and toiletries are provided. Apartments have full kitchens and spacious living areas with big sofa beds for two additional guests. 

Note that there is no elevator here, so travelers with mobility issues should request a lower-level room.

While there is no full restaurant at 24 Royal Terrace, food is available 24/7 at RT’s, the hotel’s stylish bar. The menu is short but great, with seasonal options that include soups, salads, charcuterie, and smoked salmon, as well as a few desserts and a vegetarian option. Breakfasts (not included in the standard rate) are hearty and tasty here. Options include a comprehensive continental breakfast of fresh pastries, fruit juices, yogurt, toast, and cereal, plus a few sides such as cured meats, porridge, and Scottish cheeses, or full breakfast, with French toast, eggs several ways, or a vegetarian take on the full Scottish breakfast. Room service is also available 24/7 for a fee. The bar, however, is known for its excellent drink menu, complete with a wide array of great whiskies, Champagne, and other spirits.

The small but charming yard is located in the back of the building, and features not only herbs and flowers but also a few tables where guests can sit and have a drink. 

The hotel lacks a spa and a gym, and there is no on-site parking either.
