Bottom Line

This upscale boutique hotel is right in the heart of lively Edinburgh. Just at the end of Princes Street, all the main attractions are a short walk away. The hotel has a truly Scottish personality, and a cool, contemporary style. Each of the 31 rooms is dedicated to a Scottish icon like Rod Stewart, and decorated in a modern, minimalist way. The restaurant serves great Scottish dishes and the bar is a stylish hotspot for both tourists and locals. Angels Share is slightly cheaper than the nearby Tigerlily, so it offers great value in a hard-to-beat location.

Angels Share Hotel

Scene

A good spot for party-goers, with loads of Scottish character

The hotel is in an attractive, renovated Georgian property, built in traditional Edinburgh stone. There are smart, potted trees, and tables and chairs outside. Large windows with arched tops give the place a grand look. As soon as you enter, you get a feel of the Scottish character and pride that the hotel is built on. The words of Robert Burns’ famous poem, Auld Lang Syne, are painted on the corridor walls, along with the guest rooms names after Scottish icons. The best Scottish whiskeys are served up in the stylish bar, and there are Tunnocks teacakes in every room. With live music in the bar, and a whole host of other nightspots on the doorstep, this hotel is ideal for partiers. Breakfast is served until late too, for guests who had a late night.

Rooms

Contemporary decor with a quirky twist

Rooms at the Angels Share don’t have numbers. Instead, each one has the name of a Scottish icon, and a huge, framed portrait of that person hanging above the bed. Legends from the world of music, sport, and movies have been honored, including Rod Stewart, Sir Alex Ferguson, and Sean Connery. Rooms are clean, modern, and trendy. The decor is cream and dark gray walls, a dark gray leather headboard and drapes, a small, modern chandelier, and a trendy cow hide rug. Beds are comfortable and have white, Egyptian cotton bed linen with a purple throw and cushions to add some color. Some rooms have subtle touches of tartan print. Dark wooden flooring, minimalist furniture, and a wall-mounted flat-screen TV all add to the contemporary vibe. Every room has free bottled water, free Wi-Fi, bathrobes, a hairdryer, a safe, climate control, free newspapers, and an iPod docking station. Cribs or infant beds are available for those traveling with kids; and Deluxe rooms also have a sitting area with a sofa and a stylish leather armchair, plus a super-king-size bed. The bathrooms are decked out in white and include a heated towel rail, and cream floor and wall tiles. There’s a shower over the bath and nice Scottish toiletries. The grooming areas do feel a little bland though, compared with the trendy design of the guest rooms and public areas. The cheapest rooms are a tight fit.

Features

Excellent, modern restaurant and lively, glamorous bar.

The restaurant serves up some excellent modern Scottish dishes. It’s well-priced and is popular all year round with tourists, locals, and business people. There’s a good breakfast menu too, with a full Scottish breakfast on offer, an exceptional Eggs Benedict, and lighter options such as smoked salmon, porridge, or fresh fruit salad. Breakfast isn't included in the room rate. The restaurant provides a warm and inviting environment -- there are comfortable, black leather chairs, wooden tables and floors, and red candles and salt and pepper shakers to add a splash of color. The walls are dark gray but there’s plenty of light thanks to the huge windows and large chandelier. Cream leather booths line the back wall, with large black and white photos of Scottish celebrities hanging above. A funky, red neon sign directs guests through to the bar, which is a busy and lively place. The bar has a more glitzy and glamorous look. There are black leather booths and bar stools, a silver, metallic bar and ceiling, and a row of antique-style crystal chandeliers. The focal point is the huge mirror behind the bar, which has lit glass shelves displaying a vast array of spirits. There’s an extensive cocktail, beer and wine menu, and some of Scotland’s finest whiskies can be sampled here.
