Bottom Line

Six Brunton Place is a beautifully presented property set in a typically Edinburgh Georgian townhouse on the outskirts of the city center. While there's plenty within walking distance, much of historical Edinburgh is a bit far (Old Town is around 25 minutes on foot). The property's four rooms are upscale, with plaid bed throws and original wood floors or ceiling beams, as well as modern luxury amenities including premium cable, quality toiletries, and thick robes. A daily free breakfast including fresh-squeezed juices and smoked salmon is served in the cozy dining room and gets excellent reviews from guests. The also upscale and often cheaper Fraser Suites has a more central location, but it lacks the intimacy and individualized decor of Six Brunton Place.

Six Brunton Place Guest House

Scene

Elegantly understated blend of Georgian features, contemporary art, and homey vibe

Part of a row of typically Edinburgh Georgian townhouses, there's little to advertise the presence of this guesthouse beyond the words Six Brunton Place painted neatly above its front door. Stepping inside, visitors are met by an elegantly understated entrance hall blending the building's original molded cornices and neoclassical columns with large paintings, antique furnishings, and aged patterned rugs. Designed by William Playfair and built in 1825, the property is now owned by former architect Sue Thompson, who oversaw its renovation. Although the property has been upgraded, it retains many of its charming original elements, including a superb cantilevered stone staircase and foot-worn stone flooring. A cozy front lounge with a wood-burning stove and plump couches injects a homey ambience, while modern art a contemporary lighting keep it from feeling far from old-fashioned.

Rooms

Individually styled rooms with plenty of luxury comforts

The guesthouse has just four rooms, and each is individually decorated with a mixture of fresh modern styling and antique pieces. Although the rooms are updated, all retain original features such as wooden floorboards and/or wood beams. The Garden Room extends to a furnished sunroom that opens out onto the hotel's pretty rear garden. All rooms come with iPod docks, free fast Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs with premium cable channels, and comfort is emphasized with Egyptian cotton bed linen, soft bathrobes, and deep quilted mattress toppers. Espresso machines, bottled water, and Greens and Blacks chocolate are all provided free of charge, but rooms lack mini-fridges. Bathrooms a have have heated floors and mirrors and come with high-end Arran Aromatics toiletries and thick, fluffy towels.

Features

Excellent breakfast and cozy lounge with wood burner and free wine

As Six Brunton Place is a small guesthouse, there's not a great deal in the way of facilities. However an excellent breakfast menu -- which includes a full Scottish breakfast, smoked salmon, and fresh-squeezed juices -- is served every morning as is included in the rate. The breakfast room also doubles as a cozy lounge and has a wood-burning stove and free wine in the evening, while a pleasant rear garden provides a place to unwind in warmer weather.
