Bottom Line

This 15-unit upscale hotel is an exceptionally located property right on the cobblestone Royal Mile, lined with shops, pubs, and restaurants. The Old Town apartments are within walking distance of everything; guests won’t need a car to get around the city. Built in a former 18th-century palace, the apartments offer the luxury of a high-end hotel with the convenience and privacy of apartment living. The units are clean, spacious, and comfortable, with modern kitchens and beautiful bathrooms. Guests may also want to consider the nearby Fraser Suites, which offers in-suite kitchenettes and an on-site restaurant/bar, for a moderately higher price.

Stay Edinburgh City Apartments – Royal Mile

Scene

A historic gem -- high-end apartments in an exceptional location, up a winding stone staircase

The Stay Edinburgh City Apartments - Royal Mile are a secret gem in the center of everything. The apartments are built in a former 18th-century palace, which appears very grand from the outside. Reaching the reception area, however, feels a bit Harry Potter-like, as it's located in the back and down the stairs of a cheap souvenir shop. Once downstairs, guests may find the basement room off-putting, with its slapdash rack of keys, mismatched desks, and absence of decor. Inside the main property, though, the hotel's grandeur becomes apparent. There are plenty of steep and winding stone stairs to tackle, which guest find either a hassle or part of the enchantment. (Guests should request units on lower floors if stairs are an issue.) There are no common areas in which to gather -- no bar, no restaurant -- but the apartments are architecturally striking and brightly decorated. The Stay Edinburgh is far more than a convenient “aparthotel”; it’s a traveler’s oasis. Guests tend to be families, couples, and groups of friends taking advantage of the full kitchens and excellent location.
