Scene

Modern, elegant hotel owned by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and popular with business travelers

The elegant Ten Hill Place Hotel is situated in a quiet square near the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and is owned by the College, with all of its profits invested back into training surgeons worldwide. The main areas of the hotel are housed in a modern beige-and-glass extension, though many rooms are located in a beautiful Georgian stone building that was previously the Postgraduate Residence of the College. The lobby sets the tone of the hotel's sleek, minimalist decor with a simple color palette of neutral tones enlivened by crimson accent walls and square armchairs. Besides bursts of green courtesy of a few potted plants, the space is quite simple. The 10 Wine Bar is similarly uncluttered, though bright and inviting, dotted with pops of playful colors like turquoise and yellow chairs and lamps that compliment brown walls and wooden floors. The No. Ten restaurant turns it up a notch, clad in elegant maroon shades with black-and-white photographs on the walls and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the cobblestone street and grassy square. Ten Hill Place Hotel is a popular conference hotel, with an abundance of meeting rooms and event space that includes the beautiful, historic halls and libraries belonging to the College. Though the vibe skews corporate and many guests are business travelers, families are catered to with adjoining rooms, extra rollaway beds, and baby cots.

Location

Located in a quiet residential square and within walking distance of many top Edinburgh sights

Ten Hill Place Hotel is located in Hill Square, a quiet residential square with a grassy lawn surrounded by stone Georgian buildings and cobblestone streets in Edinburgh's Old Town. The peaceful setting is a short walk from many top sights and attractions, such as the Royal Mile (seven-minute walk), the National Museum of Scotland (nine-minute walk), and Holyrood Park (six minutes away). Edinburgh Castle and Princes Street are a bit more of a trek (17-minute walk), though there are bus stops serving several lines around the corner from the hotel. Busy Nicolson Street is a block away and lined with many shops and restaurants. The Edinburgh train station is an 11-minute walk from the hotel.

Rooms

Pleasant, comfortable rooms with elegant, if generic, decor and limited amenities

There are three types of rooms available at Ten Hill Place Hotel: Classic, Superior, and Skyline. The rooms are contemporary and elegant, if a bit generic, decorated in a palette of purple, mustard, and dark green earth tones and sleek wooden furniture. All rooms are equipped with comfortable King or Super King beds, flat-screen TVs, and coffee- and tea-making facilities, though only Skyline rooms have mini-fridges, robes and slippers, and exercise bikes. Freebies include cookies, bottled water, and Wi-Fi. Many rooms have lovely views of Arthur's Seat and Salisbury Crags in Holyrood Park; others overlook the square and cobblestone streets. Frosted glass bathroom doors might pose privacy issues for some, but bathrooms are modern and fairly spacious, with shower/tub combos or walk-in showers, heated towel racks, and a limited supply of toiletries.

Features

Lovely wine bar and restaurant, plus many meeting rooms and event space

The hotel's No. 10 Restaurant is an elegant maroon-hued space serving an a la carte menu with an emphasis on locally-sourced, seasonal ingredients. The more casual and colorful 10 Wine Bar offers smaller plates, snacks, and desserts, as well as a large selection of wines. Breakfast is served at the restaurant and room service is available 24-hours a day. The hotel has an abundance of event space, meeting rooms, and conference facilities at the College's Surgeons' Hall and can accommodate up to 300 people. Limited car parking is available at the hotel (with a fee) and not guaranteed, but there are other parking facilities nearby. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
