Bottom Line

The Raeburn is an upscale, family-run boutique hotel set in a charming Georgian building in Edinburgh's affluent Stockbridge neighborhood. Although having undergone a smart, contemporary renovation there's still plenty of period charm throughout, and both bar and restaurant are popular with locals. The 10 guest rooms are well-finished with plenty of luxury touches -- even roll-top baths in some -- and in-room tech is also impressive. While it's a bit away from most of Edinburgh's tourist attractions, it's one of very few hotel in this lovely area, and one that justifies its high-end price tag.

The Raeburn

Scene

Family-run, boutique hotel with contemporary vibe and plenty of Georgian charm

Originally built in 1832 as a family home, it was the Raeburn House Hotel until 2007 when it closed and lay derelict for several years. In 2011, however, it was bought by the Maclean family, fully remodeled, and reopened in 2014 as simply The Raeburn. From its lovely Georgian facade to its mixture of warm and contemporary yet period-influenced interiors, the place feels every inch the upmarket boutique hotel. There's even a cozy library lounge decorated with classic plaid- and leather-cushioned couches, built-in wood shelves stocked with books, beautiful wood floors, and a modern gas fireplace -- check-in also occurs here. Hallways are painted in a sophisticated brown, offset by plaid-patterned stairways and brushed metal mirrors. The family-friendly hotel bar is a bustling and lively hub, popular with locals as well as guests, while its fine-dining brasserie retains plenty of the building's original historical details, including atmospheric stone walls.

Location

Set in the affluent and village-vibey Stockbridge, a couple miles from Old Town Edinburgh

The hotel is located in Stockbridge, one of the Edinburgh's more affluent and largely residential areas with a village-like vibe, just couple miles northwest of the bustling city center. About 10 minutes' walk away are Inverleith Park and the Botanical Gardens, which provide a lovely peaceful green oasis, while about a mile away is the busy main shopping area of Princes Street. While the tourist attractions of the city's medieval Old Town aren't within walking distance, it's about a 10-minute cab to the iconic Edinburgh Castle or cobbled streets of the Royal Mile.

Bathrooms are particularly nicely-finished in gray marble, with fine Victorian bathware and walk-in rainfall showers -- six of the rooms also have roll-top baths.
