Bottom Line

This mid-range time-share property is ideal for travelers looking for the comforts of home and to be fairly close (a 20-minute drive) to Fiji's main airport. Though not on the beach, the cheerful yet quiet property offers 45 one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments equipped with laundry facilities and kitchens. There's a relaxed cafe next to an attractive pool, which overlooks an 18-hole golf course. The hotel is an easy walk to Port Denarau for restaurants and nightlife, plus it's convenient for guests who need to connect to ferries departing to outer islands. Families may want to check out apartments at the Wyndham Resort Denarau Island for a beach and kid-friendly activities.

The Terraces Apartments

Scene

One of the quieter properties on Denarau, attracting primarily mature couples and families

This is one of the few time-share properties on the man-made island of Denarau and it's also the closest one Port Denarau Marina, making it convenient for those traveling to/from the outer islands. Plus, guests arriving by ferry can call The Terraces' front desk and request assistance with luggage. The hotel's entrance is bland, as the building is a mix of white and gray cement and metal. Inside is a 24-hour lobby with a tour desk, desktop computer, and wicker chairs. The back of the hotel is significantly prettier, composed of lush, well-manicured grounds around a pretty pool. Open-air hallways and stairs lead to the apartments (there is no elevator); each unit has furnished balconies with views of the pool and golf course.

The hotel is privately owned by Australians who previously ran a resort on the Coral Coast; their presence is not very visible, however. This is the smallest resort on Denarau Island, with minimal staff, and the property is peaceful and quiet. Those seeking Fijian hospitality may be disappointed, but the hotel is well-suited to families who want the comforts of a furnished apartment at an affordable rate.

Location

Next to and overlooking the Denarau Golf Course, a 20-minute drive to the airport

These apartments are located in Denarau Island, a 20-minute drive from Nadi International Airport. The property is across the street from Port Denarau Marina, making it ideal for travelers who are taking ferries to outer islands. There are also a supermarket, restaurants, and bars in this area. The hotel is situated along and overlooking the Denarau Golf Course, specifically the third hole. A downside is that the property is not along the beach, but guests can take a long walk to other resorts nearby, or catch a Bula Bus (for a fee) that makes regular rounds -- approximately every 15 minutes -- around the island. Staff can arrange airport transfers and there's free parking at the hotel.

Rooms

Clean and spacious apartment-style rooms, though furnishings show some wear and tear

There are 45 total apartments, but because this is a time-share property, only 30 are available for rental. They're situated in three-story buildings with large decks or balconies that have pretty views of the pool and waterway that connects to the Denarau Golf Course. One-, two-, and three-bedroom units all include daily housekeeping, AC, ceiling fans, free Wi-Fi, and kitchens equipped with refrigerators, dishwashers, toasters, coffeemakers, microwaves, and stoves. Depending on the size, there's enough kitchenware for four or six people. Every unit has dining and living areas that include flat-screen TVs, DVD players, and stereos. Bathrooms have walk-in showers, hairdryers, and toiletries. There are also washing machines and dryers in each apartment. Some furnishings do have wear and tear, however.

One-bedroom units are on the ground level for easier access to the pool. These have queen-size beds and pullout sofas. Kitchens in these units are narrow and have less counter space than larger rooms. Two-bedroom apartments are located across the second and third floors (duplexes) and include bigger kitchens and living room areas. A set of stairs leads to both bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. Two- and three-bedroom units have either queen- or king-size beds and two twins.

Features

Outdoor pool ideal for swimming laps and an adjacent cafe

The attractive outdoor pool is a highlight of the property and includes a 25-meter lane for swimming laps. The pool is surrounded by sun loungers and umbrellas, and a section of the water has a tent to provide shade. There's a shallow area for children.

The adjacent Terraces Poolside Cafe serves European and Asian fare for breakfast, lunch, and dinner -- think eggs, sandwiches, salads, and stir-fry, along with snacks (egg rolls and french fries) straight from the counter. It also serves fresh juice, espresso, beer, wine, and cocktails, though closes early and is not a late-night dining or drinking spot. Room service is also available for an additional fee. A short walk away are plenty of restaurants at the marina, like Lulu's and Hard Rock Cafe, as well as a grocery store for stocking the fridge. Guests can also visit any resort on Denarau for dining options.

The Denarau Island 18-hole golf course offers lessons, clinics, and a driving range. Carts are included with green fees and rental clubs and shoes are available. Guests have access to 10 tennis courts (some that are grass) for private lessons, clinics, and ball machines for practice. The Denarau Golf & Racquet Club's clubhouse has a sports bar theme, as well as a rum tasting room from Fiji Rum Co.

The lobby offers a tour desk for day trips and excursions, a game area, and book exchange. Babysitting services are also available. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
