Bottom Line

The mid-range Hotel Roma sits in a prime area of Florence, within walking distance of major attractions, public transportation, restaurants, and shops. Rooms are small and can get street noise. Most are updated, with lovely tile bathrooms and pedestal sinks, but some are dated with older furnishings. Much of the stained glass found in the hotel was made by Art Nouveau pioneer Galileo Chini, and there are lovely paintings on the walls. The hotel's rooftop terrace has exquisite views of the Piazza Santa Maria Novella, and there’s an on-site Art Deco bar and breakfast room. Expect to pay extra for breakfast and parking.

Hotel Roma

Scene

Historic hotel with classic Italian design

The Hotel Roma is housed in an 18th-century building that looks out over the Piazza Santa Maria Novella. The rooftop terrace doesn’t have any seating, but it does provide splendid views of the city and the plaza. Famed Italian decorator Galileo Chini, who's most often associated with the Art Nouveau movement created many of the stained glass windows in the hotel. Turquoise walls, decorative tile work, crown moldings, columns, and mirrored elevators add to the a grand, upscale ambience. There are free newspapers in the lobby and a lovely wood front desk with a golden ceiling light-fixture as well as exquisite paintings and comfortable cream leather chairs.

Rooms

A mix of renovated and dated rooms, all with flat-screen TVs and well-stocked minibars

Rooms at the Hotel Roma are mostly contemporary and renovated, although a few still have tired yellow bedspreads and dated red carpet from another time. Many of the rooms have modern but plain color palettes of light grayish-blues and browns with simple framed artwork on the walls. Rooms vary in size, but the larger ones are suitably spacious for a small family. Although rooms are soundproofed, some past guests have complained of street noise. All rooms come with free newspapers, flat-screen TVs, and well-stocked minibars. Bathrooms vary in style and have heated towel racks and walk-in showers; some also have tubs. Stylish brown tile covers the walls, shower stalls, and floors of the bathrooms, but most have pedestal sinks and lack counter space.

There's no proper restaurant, but there is an elegant bar serving cocktails and other drinks in a classically appointed room with marble floors and frescoed walls and ceilings.
