Truman Hotel

Scene

Key West gentility combined with South Beach hipness; great for tourists, including families

The Truman Hotel is one of area's hipper hotels, combining Key West’s cultured Southern flair with a bit of South Beach trendiness. From the outside, the Truman looks newer than most of the area inns, and its attractive, curtained balconies add to the upscale appearance of the property. Inside, the walls are hung with local, mostly modern art, and lobby furnishings are minimal and stylish. There isn't enough lobby space for gathering, but there is a very private-feeling courtyard pool, where the soothing sounds of fountains, and relaxing underwater jets create an oasis. There are a variety of outdoor seating areas, including clusters of modern black and gray armchairs, sunbeds, cafe tables, and couches under large, sheltering palms. The grounds aren't huge, but there are plenty of old trees and little paths that make the space feel private and exclusive, despite the small area. A continental breakfast is served in an open-air cafe area by the pool, and a pitcher of fresh iced tea is ever present on the poolside bar. The Truman is an affordable, up to date, and ultra-civilized spot for a Key West vacation, suitable for all sorts of tourists, including families.
