Bottom Line

The antidote to the loud, brassy resorts in Fuerteventura, this humble mid-range hotel made up of just 10 rooms and 12 villas lives up to its “oasis” name. The setting, away from the beach and tucked into the desert interior, isn’t walking distance to the area’s main attractions. But those wanting to be closer to nature (hikers and birdwatchers) will be happy here, as will those that prioritize tranquility over location. Features are kept to a short list: a restaurant/bar and a small pool, but they foster an intimate atmosphere and add to the property’s serenity. Travelers looking for a small-scale property a bit closer to the action may prefer Avanti Hotel Boutique Fuerteventura.

Hotel Boutique & Villas Oasis Casa Vieja

Scene

Historic, Spanish home and peaceful pool scene with plenty of local atmosphere

A clue to this property’s atmosphere is at the tail end of its title: “Casa Vieja” (old house). Set away from the main thoroughfare by a dirt road, the property opens up like a rustic Spanish estate. The lobby and restaurant are part of the original antique home, with thick whitewashed walls. A set of five rooms are just off the restaurant circling a traditional courtyard anchored by a twisting palm tree. The other rooms are placed around the pool, a little body of water accented by a waterfall feature. Guests, mostly couples, can be found here sunbathing or quietly reading a novel. There’s nothing in the way of piped in music or animation, and that’s exactly how guests like it. Beyond the pool, individual paths lead to the property’s handful of villas, each its own self-contained unit. These are typically used by families, another factor that adds tranquility, as children tend to play and splash around in their own villas’ pool.

Location

Secluded location near hiking trails, a drive from the beach

This property is a bit more remote than many other resorts in the area, but that’s not necessarily a con. Its location, a bit more in the desert interior of northern Fuerteventura, means its truly out in nature. Hiking, biking, and even bird-watching is easily done here. (Though the location isn’t totally isolated. Several private residences are in the surrounding hillside.) The town center of La Oliva is a five-minute drive away, while the large beach of Playa Del Moro is a 24-minute drive. The airport is a 29-minute drive away.

Rooms

Atmospheric, Old World rooms and villas with modern amenities

Accommodations here are split into two categories: rooms and villas, but both display the property’s traditional Spanish style, and both offer their share of peace and quiet. Heavy, carved furniture, and beamed ceilings give an Old World look to the spaces. But despite their antique style, amenities remain modern. Rooms include minibars, safes, small flat-screen TVs -- but no Wi-Fi. Note that there is no air-conditioning either (which is typical of many mid-range hotels in the area), but fans are provided. Bathrooms in the rooms also include jetted tubs -- a nice luxe detail. Villas are far more spacious; each has three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a dining room, and a full kitchen, complete with full-sized appliances: refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, electric kettle, microwave, toaster, even a washing machine. Dishware and cookware are included. Villas also have their own private pools and terraces with loungers and romantic details like Juliet balconies in the second floor of these duplex units. But throughout the property, some rooms and villas are showing signs of wear, like rusted bathroom fixtures.

Features

A short list of features including a small pool and an excellent restaurant

Features here are limited, but what’s on offer adds to the hotel’s charm. The restaurant and bar, carrying the hotel’s rustic theme, serves all meals. Food here is attentively prepared and superior to many resort buffets. Breakfast is always included in room rates, but not with villas. And half-board rates are also available. The hotel's petite pool has a small waterfall feature and a handful of loungers for sunbathing. (Villas have their own private pools.) For families, cribs and high chairs are available to borrow. Staff can arrange for in-room massages as well. Free Wi-Fi is available in the restaurant and around reception, but not in rooms or villas.
