Brickhouse Inn Bed & Breakfast

From the moment guests enter the 1898 Victorian mansion that serves as the main building of this lovely B&B, it becomes apparent that the hosts go to great lengths to furnish and maintain the property's historic ambiance. At every turn there are fine period antiques and quality rugs in rich colors on the beautiful hardwood floors. Historic letters and photos related to Gettysburg’s rich history as well as period art are hung throughout the public spaces. With only 15 rooms spread among three buildings, the inn is quiet and charming, especially for couples. Breakfast is served at several communal tables in two dining rooms or the lovely garden area, allowing guests to mingle. Note that while there are three rooms located on the ground floor of one building, the property lacks elevators and guests must climb stairs to reach the second- and third-floor rooms.

The Inn is located on in the heart of Gettysburg’s historic district, within walking distance of many of the city’s most visited landmarks. The Culp’s Hill section of Gettysburg’s battlefield is less than a one-minute walk behind the inn. The Jennie Wade House is a two-minute walk and the Soldiers’ National Cemetery is seven minutes away on foot. Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address Memorial is an eight-minute walk, while Gettysburg College and the Gettysburg National Military Park are a five- to six-minute drive. Harrisburg Area Community College and the North Gettysburg Shopping Center are also both a five-minute drive away. The Outlet Shoppes at Gettysburg and Eisenhower National Historic Site are seven- to eight-minute drives. Numerous restaurants are within a one- to three-minute walk of the hotel, and many more are within a very brief drive. Approximate drives times to regional airports include York (40 minutes), Harrisburg (55 minutes), and Baltimore (95 minutes).  

Typical of a historic inn, the rooms here come in different sizes and are individually decorated. Three of the 15 rooms are suites, with two offering twin-size daybeds in separate sitting areas. The rooms are actually spread among three separate buildings. The main building is the 1898 Victorian brick mansion. Next door is the circa 1830 Welty House that was occupied by Confederate sharpshooters during the epic battle and still bears some bullet scars. One room is in the carriage house located at the end of the garden area. It's not historic but offers the most privacy of any guest room. All rooms are clean and offer ample space to be comfortable. They feature beautiful hardwood floors accented with high-quality rugs and lovely period antiques in good condition. Beds are either carved wood or wrought iron with colorful quilts or comforters. Upholstered armchairs and loveseats provide seating, and traditional art or historic prints decorate some walls, which are typically painted in soft earth tones. Some rooms feature private, covered balconies with rocking chairs. Views are either of historic Baltimore Street or the garden area. Many of the rooms also have electric fireplaces and all have individually controlled heating and air-conditioning and small flat-screen TVs. Despite being on the main drag of the historic district, rooms are quiet. Most bathrooms have shower/tub combos and tend to be spacious with windows, although a few rooms only have walk-in showers. Some rooms feature antique claw-foot tubs with overhead showers encircled by wrap-around curtains.

The Brickhouse Inn Bed & Breakfast is rather generous with its freebies including breakfast, snacks, parking, and Wi-Fi. A three-course breakfast is included in room rates and gets good reviews, with a menu that changes daily. Breakfast is served in two dining rooms in the main building, and the large garden area has a brick patio with seating for breakfast in warm weather. (The lushly landscaped garden also has a koi pond, a waterfall, and various sitting areas that offer privacy.) The inn also provides free coffee, tea, soft drinks, water, and various baked goods and other snacks throughout the day. Staff can help book tours, secure reservations at restaurants, and provide other concierge-type services. The inn offers its own packages as well, some of which include area tours and related activities. Babysitting services also can be arranged. The main building has a refrigerator where guests can store food or beverages. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, and there's free parking behind the main building.
