Stand-out features include its excellent rooftop restaurant (the only one in the city) and not only minibars but a choice of crystal decanted spirits are free of charge in every room; some rooms also have balconies with great city views. Faux, manor house interiors or the busy design with bright colors might not appeal to everyone and the lack of fitness facilities may be a let down, though for a super-central location and free booze, this property offers great value.

Opened in 1999, the Carlton George Hotel occupies a modern, seven-story building sandwiched between two period properties and shared with a Waxy O'Connors Irish pub. Visitors enter under a polished granite arch and a pair of Saltire flags into the hotel's relatively small lobby area -- a real open fire, tartan-upholstered armchairs, and trompe l'oeil bookcase giving an instant feeling of a snug manor house library. The only genuinely old piece is a fine 19th century antique fireplace surround and together with the Latin maxim "Ipsa Scientia Potestas Est" (Knowledge is Power) painted above the reception desk completes the old school, albeit faux, aristocratic ambience.

Amenities in all rooms are outstanding -- if rather boozy -- including free minibars and crystal decanters of whisky, gin, and vodka. Wi-Fi access is also free as are local phone calls, while flat-screen TVs and electric kettles also come as standard. While non-street facing rooms can feel a little lacking in natural light, a standout feature of the hotel is the top rooms with balconies from which you can see right across the city.
