Bottom Line

The Hotel du Vin at One Devonshire Gardens is a 49-room luxury hotel occupying an elegant row of Victorian townhouses in Glasgow's West End neighborhood. While there's not a great deal in the immediate area, car access is particularly easy and the city center is a 15-minute drive away. The property’s period features have been superbly maintained and the chain's focus on food and drink means top-notch dining options. While rooms are full of high-end touches, some are indeed of a refresh and a few can feel gloomy. Overall, it's an excellent example of the du Vin chain and one of the finest hotel's you'll find in the Glasgow area.

Hotel du Vin at One Devonshire Gardens

Scene

Distinguished traditional elegance set in grand Victorian townhouses

Housed in a row of impeccably presented Victorian townhouses, this Hotel du Vin cuts a particularly impressive figure from the outset. Originally constructed in the 1870s, the hotel was first opened in 1986 in the number one building and eventually expanded to occupy all five; it was bought by the du Vin chain in 2006. Inside is no less grand, with all the trapping of its 19th-century origins on display, from beautiful stained glass windows to old mosaics to crown moldings to wood paneling. Every effort has been taken to maintain a sense of history, with vintage wallpaper, antique furnishings, and gilt-framed oil paintings contributing to the hotel's air of aged refinement. As one of the most distinguished hotels in the area, it attracts plenty of well-heeled travelers; it is also no stranger to the occasional celebrity guest, such as George Clooney and Kylie Minogue. The hotel is also popular with weddings and has been licensed for ceremonies.

Location

Set on tree-lined road 15 minutes' drive from central Glasgow

The hotel is located on a peaceful tree-lined road that runs parallel to the busy main road that leads into the north of Glasgow. It is set on the outskirt of the city's fashionable West End neighborhood, and the surrounding area is largely residential and upmarket with little in the way of dining or shopping within walking distance. The location is particularly convenient for those arriving by car and it's about a 15-minute drive into central Glasgow.

Rooms

Rooms have luxury touches and smart traditional styling -- though some are a little dark.

The hotel's 49 room are decorated in a tasteful blend of contemporary styling, traditional elements, and splashes of tartan. Plenty of the building's original features, such as high ceilings and bay windows, have been retained. Upscale comforts include hand-sprung mattresses and Egyptian bedclothes; in addition, minibars, espresso machines, and iPod docks all come as standard. Smart, vintage-style bathrooms include separate roll-top tubs and rainfall showers, as well as robes and slippers. Suites are particularly spacious and plush, and some offer standout features such as saunas, jetted tubs, four-poster beds, and direct access to the hotel's secret garden. A few rooms, however, are looking a little in need of a refresh, while others are lacking in natural light.

Features

Typically high-end dining options with impressive wine list and cellar

As with most Hotel du Vin properties, the eating and drinking options are a highlight. The hotel's oak-paneled bistro is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and offers a variety of dining options including a la carte, prix fixe, and seven-course tasting menus. Unsurprisingly, there's also a real emphasis on wine, with a dedicated sommelier as well as a wine cellar with hundreds of labels. A lounge bar with a real fire and wingback chairs provides a cozy place to relax while the Whiskey Bar has dozens of rare and old whiskies to try. There is a small fitness room and Wi-Fi is available free of charge throughout.
