Bottom Line

The Menzies Glasgow Hotel is an upscale, chain hotel comprising 129 rooms and 12 apartments located west of Glasgow's center. While the immediate surrounds aren't very attractive, proximity to the motorway makes for easy car access and the city center is easily walkable. Apartments are especially nicely finished, with some charming period features like exposed brick walls plus kitchenettes; Sky Sports channels will certainly appeal to some. While rates aren't too much cheaper than some more central hotels, the on-site health club with a huge indoor pool makes this more than worth a look.

Hallmark Hotel Glasgow

Scene

Modern chain hotel on site of 19th-century mill with parts of original building

Built on the site of an old rice mill, the Menzies Glasgow Hotel is part relatively dated modern block and part charming 19th-century red brick building. Stepping through its revolving door entrance, visitors enter a spacious, low-ceilinged lobby area decorated with a blend of the hotels signature plum tones, patterned carpet, and wood paneling. The vibe is distinctly chain hotel with a warm, modern finish and a few traditional touches plus black-and-white photographs that allude to the area's history. Clientele is a mix of business travelers during the week who enjoy easy road access and leisure guests at weekends who'd prefer to be away from the noise of the city center. The atmosphere is pleasant and quiet.

Location

Just off the M8 motorway exit and 10 minutes' walk from Glasgow center

There's not a great deal in the immediate surrounds of the hotel and it is not a particularly attractive part of the city, however it's not much more than a 10-minute stroll to the very center of Glasgow. Its proximity to the M8 motorway turnoff also makes it very convenient for those arriving by car, while the Anderston railway station is a five-minute walk away and is one stop to Glasgow's SSE Hydro and SECC concert and event venues.

Rooms

Pleasant rooms plus apartments with well-equipped kitchenettes and flat-screen TVs with Sky Sports

The hotel has 129 rooms, which are located in the main modern part of the building, while its 12 apartments are situated in the period section of the hotel. Decor is smart and modern with splashes of color and contemporary blond-wood furnishings, while apartments make a feature of original exposed brick and wooden beams. Free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, and electric kettles come as standard and flat-screen TVs include Sky Sports 1 to 4 and Sky Sports F1. Apartments also include pretty well-equipped kitchenettes and separate lounge areas with CD players -- the Loft Manhattan Suite offers especially chic, contemporary accommodation spread over two floors. Some of the bathrooms, however, feel a little dated in comparison, albeit with robes and slippers provided.

Features

Access to on-site health club with swimming pool and spa facilities

Unlike many Glasgow hotels of this caliber, the Menzies Glasgow Hotel offers on-site spa facilities that include a heated indoor pool, sauna, steam room, and hot tub as well as a gym and spa offering massage and beauty treatments. The health club is independent of the hotel however and is open to non-guests -- some areas could also use a refresh. A buffet breakfast is served each morning in the hotel's Brasserie restaurant (not included in the standard rate) which is also open for lunch and dinner with a menu of British favorites. On-site parking is available and very reasonably priced, but spaces are limited.
