Bottom Line

This Premium Inn is a typical, budget-level hotel located with easy access to the M74 and 15 minutes from Glasgow. There's little or nothing to surprise anyone who's experienced the chain, though this is certainly its appeal to some. Rooms are clean, if a little tired in places; amenities are basic but sufficient; and beds are extra comfy. A cozy bar-restaurant provides a decent breakfast and menu through the day, and Wi-Fi is free if a little slow. The main selling point is probably that it's one of very few hotels in the area and more than adequate for the average business traveler and vacationing families on a stopover.

Oyster Hotel Review

Premier Inn Glasgow (Cambuslang/M74, J2A) Hotel

Scene

Functional budget accommodation typical of the Premier Inn chain

This property certainly doesn't break the tried and tested Premier Inn mold of low-rise purpose-built accommodation surrounded by a car park. Parts of the outside, however, are starting to look a little more tired than most while other sections are newer, and another "wing" is in the process of being built at the time of writing. The interior follows the brand's signature palette of purples and blond wood and the typical budget chain-hotel ambience that visitors expect. Obviously far from being a destination hotel, clientele are a transient mixture of business travelers and vacationing families on a stopover to somewhere more interesting. The new wing is due to be finished toward the end of 2015 and will add 14 new guest rooms and 99 parking spaces. Thankfully, little or no construction can be heard in the current rooms, though parking is limited until completion.

Location

Just off the M74, a 15 minutes' drive from central Glasgow

The hotel is just off the A74 highway, which itself comes off the M74 -- one of the main motorways that connects drivers to Glasgow. Immediately in front of the hotel is a KFC and McDonalds followed by an industrial estate and a retail park, so it's hardly picturesque, though there's plenty in the way of local shopping and dining. Glasgow city center is about a 15-minute drive away, and Edinburgh is around an hour in the opposite direction.

Rooms

Standard chain decor with extra-comfy beds and modern bathrooms

Amenities are adequate, including free (but slow) Wi-Fi, small flat-screen TVs, basic tea/coffee facilities, and hairdryers. The brand also maintains a genuine emphasis on providing extra-comfy beds, and bathrooms are clean and modern with wall-mounted soap dispensers and shower/tub combinations. The brand's signature purple is everywhere: in bed runners, curtains, headboards, even gracing the shower curtains. While windows are triple glazed, those facing the motorway are prone to some degree of traffic noise. Some furnishings are starting to show wear and tear, though renovations are planned.

Features

All-you-can-eat cooked breakfast and free though slow Wi-Fi

The hotel's bar-restaurant -- Orion Way -- serves a hearty all-you-can-eat cooked breakfast each morning, as well as lighter and healthier options though it's not included in the standard rate. The eatery also offers an extensive and reasonably-priced menu of the usual favorites for lunch and dinner as well as a cozy bar. Parking is free of charge on-site -- though spaces are limited during the extension construction. Wi-Fi is also free though slow and only really good for activities like checking email.
