Bottom Line

The Premier Inn Glasgow City Centre South is a better-than-average example of the popular chain. Rooms are simple and spacious with modern, clean bathrooms, though those facing the road get some traffic noise. While the surroundings are far from attractive, Glasgow city center is a 15-minute walk away. Budget travelers may want to check rates with the Holiday Inn just across the river, although most will find that this Premier Inn represents a better all-round value for the money.

Premier Inn Glasgow City Centre South Hotel

Scene

Above-average outlet of the popular Premier Inn brand, thanks to recent renovations

The Premier Inn Glasgow City Centre South is one of six Premier Inns in Glasgow, and it's certainly one of the nicest. The hotel follows the usual Premier Inn formula: modern construction with simple, almost sparse interiors decorated with signature purple branding. However, guests who are familiar with the brand will notice that this location is notably more pleasant than average, thanks to a 2014 renovation. The reception area is unassuming, with a tiny check-in desk and little else, while a single elevator transports guests to one of just three floors, each clean, well-maintained, and awash with the chain's ubiquitous purple. The hotel caters primarily to guests on a budget, including both vacationers and business travelers.

Location

Unattractive setting south of the River Clyde, within walking distance of central Glasgow

Located on the south side of the River Clyde, the hotel is about a 15-minute walk from the center of Glasgow. The immediate surroundings feel run down, and there's a noticeable amount of construction in the area, but the neighborhood is still safe and there are a few bars and restaurants within a five-minute walk. The Bridge Street Underground station is an eight-minute walk away, and the O2 Academy Glasgow music venue is just a little farther. The airport takes around 15 minutes to reach by car.

Rooms

Simple, modern, and large rooms with comfy beds and some traffic noise

The hotel has 114 larger-than-average rooms, all decorated with the chain's typical wood furnishings, colorful art prints, and purple carpets and bed throws. In-room amenities include kettles and flat-screen TVs. The chain's signature Hypnos beds are particularly comfortable, while bathrooms are clean and modern with walk-in showers and wall-mounted soap dispensers. However, street-facing rooms get some traffic noise. Wi-Fi is free for the first 30 minutes of use, and extra time can be purchased from the front desk.

Features

Restaurant with good buffet breakfast, plus meeting rooms and free on-site parking

A good selection of hot and cold items for breakfast are available in the hotel's Thyme Restaurant served in a cheerful and colorful buffet area, though it's not included in room rates. The restaurant also serves standard British fare a la carte at lunch, and dinner and kids' meals are available. There's also a bar area serving drinks throughout the day. On-site parking is free -- unusual for the brand's urban locations -- and there are four meeting rooms available for rent.
