The 90-unit Altamadores Apartamentos clings to the side of a steep valley looking toward the sea, which gives every patio, terrace, and guest-room balcony an unobstructed panoramic view of the island and the water beyond. The apartments and grounds are unpretentious and extremely well-maintained, with plenty of space for quiet relaxation and a wide variety of planned activities for more energetic vacationers. However, decor is stark and the hotel lacks amenities such as a fitness center. The Altamadores has a large number of repeat customers, which is always a good sign.
Scene
Laid-back property with low-key offerings like self-service bars
The Altamadores Apartamentos is laid-back, with nothing fancy but the spectacular views of the valley and sea below. Built into the side of a steep hill, the complex is made up of terraces and patios, some vibrant and crowded, others peaceful and meditative. It feels like a small tropical town, with restaurants, bars, barbecue, sports, and a supermarket for those who want to stock their rooms with food or re-up on sunscreen. The bars around the property offer jugs of white and red wine and sangria, beer on tap, liquor and mixers, to which guests are welcome to help themselves. The lobby, although on the small side, is several stories high, with massive windows and endless views that make it special. The buffet restaurant is anything but intimate or elegant, furnished as it is with plastic chairs and plain tables, but, again, the skylights and windows add a natural dimension that no decorator can beat. The complex is under renovation, but even the unrenovated portions are far from worn and run-down, making for an experience that offers a lot of value (and fun) at a very reasonable price.
Location
On a steep valley slope, surrounded by apartments and hotels, with ravishing views
The Altamadoros Apartamentos clings to the side of a valley slope, in a quiet area filled with vacation apartments and hotels. Famed Playa de los Amadores Beach is down the hill, but the walk is super steep, and the climb back up provides serious exercise. (The complex offers free parking for those who prefer to drive.) There are no bars or nightclubs within walking distance of the apartments, but there are exquisite sunsets and live acts in the evenings.
Rooms
Large balconies or terraces, romantic ceiling fans, and spacious kitchens characterize these otherwise bland spaces.
Apartments at the Altamadores Apartamentos are clean, roomy, and bright. Each unit has a terrace, and many have tall, rough-hewn rock walls for privacy. Some terraces are large enough for sunbeds and beach umbrellas; all have superb views. All the apartments have ceiling fans, but renovations are underway and air-conditioning is being installed throughout. Beds have comfortable memory foam toppers. Kitchens are large enough to move around, with breakfast bars, microwaves, and full-size fridges, but stoves are too small for much cooking. Bathrooms are large and spotlessly clean with walk-in showers. Rooms have large flat-screen TVs, but decor is minimal. Walls are nearly bare and plaid-heavy decor is more reminiscent of a dated country inn versus an island property.
Features
Pools with Astroturf lawns, kids' activities, basketball, and soccer
There is constant entertainment at the Altamadores Apartamentos, including cash Bingo, water polo, basketball, soccer, quiz games, and more. Kids are well cared for by kids' club staff, so parents can get a holiday break. The pools sit on a large terrace with panoramic sea views, surrounded by an Astroturf deck and plenty of sunbeds, as well as a self-serve bar with sangria, wine, beer, and liquor; the feel is of a private swim club in a luxe vacation getaway. For those who want to sunbathe in more peaceful environs, there is a quiet solarium on another patio.
