Hotel Green Field

Those arriving for the first time at the Green Field may find the entrance hard to locate -- it is sandwiched between pubs and restaurants on a busy street in central Playa del Ingles. The building is just like every other structure in the neighborhood: white, boxy and plain, and built around a main pool deck. Common spaces here are generic and a little dated, especially the lobby and the restaurant. The reception feels stuck in the 80s, with dated gray floors, a few worn dark couches, and peach-colored walls. Vending machines, older massage chairs, and piles of tourist brochures lend the space a budget feel, and windows overlook a covered courtyard with exterior room entrances instead of the street. The buffet restaurant has a particularly drab feel, with canteen-style wooden furniture and limited natural light. The outdoor areas, however, are more pleasant and inviting, including the small central garden complete with ponds full of waterlilies and rocks, and the pool deck, which is the heart of the action during the day. The atmosphere here is lively and loud, with daily fitness activities in the pool, and evening shows. The hotel sees all manner of budget travelers, drawn by the all-inclusive packages that are on offer -- most are couples, but families and groups of friends also pass through. 

The hotel is located on a busy street lined with pubs and casual restaurants, a few blocks from the lively city center. The heart of the nightlife area is just about a 10-minute walk away, and Yumbo Centrum -- a mall known for its hopping clubs -- can be reached on foot in about 20 minutes, or by car in five. This location is also convenient for those planning to spend some time at the beach, and the town’s long stretch of sand is less than a 10-minute walk down the street. Maspalomas dunes and beach are just a 10-minute drive away. The atmosphere there is quieter and it has more stunning scenery. Grand Canaria's airport can be reached in about 20 minutes by car.

The hotel has 324 air-conditioned studios and one-bedroom apartments, all featuring spacious balconies with plastic patio furniture. Wood-laminate floors and Ikea-style kitchen cabinets give rooms a simple look that's modern enough at first glance, but basic wooden side tables and headboards with blue accents diminish the effect. Additionally, thin orange bedspreads look lifted from a previous decade, and wall art is limited to generic floral posters and landscapes in cheap frames. All units have small kitchenettes with two hot plates, a mini-fridge, a sink, and just about enough utensils to make a simple meal. All but Standard Studios feature living areas with a twin sofa bed and a flat-screen TV. Safes and Wi-Fi are available for a daily or weekly fee. Bathrooms are clean but dated, with gray granite counters, basic shower/tub combos with glass screens, and wall-mounted hairdryers. Noise is an issue throughout the hotel, with poor soundproofing between rooms and a few loud bars right below the hotel. Light sleepers may want to request a room on a higher floor overlooking the pool area. Maintenance complaints aren't unheard of from previous guests as well.

The main pool deck is lively and loud with fitness activities during the day, but the pool is large enough for those not joining the entertainment to swim or take a quick dip. There are dozens of loungers and a few umbrellas around the pool, and while the best spots are taken early in the morning, getting a chair isn’t generally a problem throughout most of the day. The pool is connected to a spacious whirlpool with a few jets, and there is a separate shallow pool for kids. The snack bar serves drinks and small bites during the day, and has a few tables under large umbrellas off to one side of the main deck. Adjacent to the kiddy pool is the fitness gazebo, which features a couple of strength-training machines but little else. Average, repetitive buffet meals are offered at the only on-site restaurant, and there is a spacious pub in the lobby with a stage for evening shows. All-inclusive rates are available, as are other various meal plans. The hotel also features a few parking spots on-site, and free Wi-Fi in the reception area.
