Servatur Puerto Azul

The Servatur Aparthotel originally opened in 1989 and the hotel's architecture still bears much of the boxy styling of that era. But a major renovation in 2009 and subsequent remodeling has made the complex look much less dated than its competitors in the area. The reception area welcomes guests into a large, airy atrium heavily clad in polished granite and liberally decorated with palms, bamboo, and a large centerpiece chandelier. Various annexes are connected by steep stairways and terraces, offering ample vantage points for taking in the beautiful cliff-top views. The focus here is very much about enhancing the family experience, though the hotel ensures a kid-free terrace for adults complete with hot tubs.

The hotel is built into a hillside overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and Puerto Rico bay, on the southwest coast of Gran Canaria. The Amadores man-made beach and resort center are about a mile and a half away down a long flight of steps, so a car or taxi is recommended. Local bars and shops, however, can be found with a few minutes' walk. Gran Canaria Airport is 30 miles away, or about a 40-minute drive. Parking at the hotel is free.

The property's 387 one-bedroom apartments are clean and bright with modern decor and furnishings. Some of the renovated units have wooden floors and more contemporary furnishings. All include lounge areas and kitchenettes with burners and microwaves. Flat-screen TVs with satellite channels are standard. Bunk beds are a nice option for kids. Blue and white bathrooms include a basic shower/tub combo and small sink. There's a fee for Wi-Fi unless guests have opted for a package arrangement, and safes are available for a fee. Apartments open onto large furnished balconies, but not all of them have sea views.

The hotel has a large swimming pool complex surrounded by sun loungers and another smaller pool overlooking the sea. There's a large sun terrace with panoramic views, which includes an adults-only chill-out area with Balinese daybeds, and hot tubs. Families will appreciate a room for teens, and a game room, which has video games, a pool table, ping-pong, and activities. There are two restaurants (a buffet restaurant and a cafe) and two bars (one in the lobby and one poolside), as well as an on-site supermarket for replenishing supplies. Half-board packages can be purchased for meals.
