Hilton Guangzhou Tianhe

The Hilton brand isn't exactly known for its high style or innovative design, but that may be changing with additions like the Hilton Guangzhou Tianhe to its roster. The stacked-glass exterior of the 24-floor hotel has a funky, even edgy look, and that impression continues throughout the hotel's common areas. There's just an extra dash of shimmer throughout the hotel's interiors, from polished stone and quartz flooring to the dark and sexy color palette. An eye-catching wavy wall of metal tiles adds to the effect, as does the sparkling, low-flow light fixture that ripples overhead. The lobby isn't exactly a place to kick back and hang out -- though there's plenty of opportunities for that within this large property -- and there are multiple check-in desks that are designed to handle the large crowds of guests who stay here. In fact, the atmosphere can be busy, especially during the Canton Fair seasons. With a free shuttle to the nearby Guangzhou East Railway and the Canton Fair, this hotel appeals to travelers who are commuting by train or in town on business.

The hotel is in the Tianhe District, across from Guangzhou Sport University and within a 10-minute walk, or five-minute drive of the Guangzhou East Railway Station. The train station also has a metro stop, for those wanting to explore the city by public transit. There are a number of restaurants and shops nearby, as well as plenty of businesses. Within walking distance is the CITIC Plaza and the Popark Shopping Plaza, but otherwise the main attractions in Tianhe are removed. It's a 10- to 15-minute taxi ride to Tianhe Stadium, Guangzhou Opera House, Canton Tower, and Guangzhou Library -- it will take between 25 and 35 minutes to reach these destinations by metro. Pazhou International Convention and Exhibition Centre is 20 minutes away by car, while the Canton Fair -- a massive business event held twice a year -- is a 25-minute drive from the hotel (a free shuttle runs during fair season). Baiyun Mountain is also a 25-minute drive away. Expect a 50-minute drive to the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport.

Rooms are handsome and contemporary, with just a bit more gloss than most Hilton brand loyalists may be used to. Furniture and decor all has a moody look given, surprising given this hotel's predominantly business inclinations. Details include dark wood-veneer walls, sleek black desks, deep maroon velvet seating, gold accent panels, and bold patterned carpets. All rooms are spacious, with even entry-level rooms offering 45-square-meter floor plans (484 square feet). Large windows overlook the city, and all rooms have spacious closets with safes, irons/ironing boards, umbrellas, and slippers. Rooms also have electric kettles, minibars, iPod docks, flat-screen TVs, and DVD players. Frosted doors lead to sleek bathrooms with long black vanities, modern fixtures, and separate showers and bathtubs -- not always a common feature in Guangzhou, even among upscale hotels. Makeup mirrors and Peter Thomas Roth toiletries come standard as well. Curved windows offer 180-degree views in Suites, which also have separate living rooms and Nespresso machines. The two-bedroom Presidential Suite has a whirlpool tub, a living room, dining area, and kitchen. Accessible rooms feature roll-in showers and safety bars in bathrooms.

There are a number of nice-to-have features at this hotel, some of which are particularly handy given the hotel's corporate-friendly ethos, but many that are nice for kicking back as well. The outdoor infinity pool stays open into the evening and overlooks the city. There are a few lounge chairs on the deck. It can get busy, as can the hotel's fitness center, which has floor-to-ceiling windows plus modern cardio and weight machines, as well as a small set of free weights. The full-service spa offers a Vichy shower, a sauna, and steam rooms, among other services. 

The business center faces the pool and it includes a TV lounge with inflatable toys for children. Wi-Fi is free in the lobby, but in rooms the service is only available for a fee -- unless guests are members of the Hilton HHonors club (a free loyalty club that can be joined in advance). For corporate travelers there are nine meeting spaces, including two ballrooms for up to 500-person receptions, and optional catering. Additionally, when Canton Fair is taking place, the hotel runs a free shuttle to the venue. A free shuttle also runs to the train station year round, though bookings must be made in advance.

Numerous restaurants provide indoor and outdoor dining plus room service. The Alfresco serves tapas on a stylish outdoor terrace. Cafe at 2 has casual breakfast, lunch, and dinner buffet service. Italian cuisine is offered in Il Ponte, with two VIP dining rooms, and Sui Xuan serves Cantonese cuisine. Bar One provides live entertainment and a game area with a pool table and foosball. T Lounge and Bar is located in the lobby and serves everything from coffee to cocktails. Those staying in Suites and Executive Rooms have access to a private lounge with perks like free breakfast, snacks, and drinks.
