Bottom Line

There are 27 rooms at this stylish two-and-a-half-pearl boutique motel. North of downtown Montauk, the hotel's quiet Montauk Harbor area is just a five-minute walk from the harbor’s bars and restaurants. Just across the street is a beautiful beach that tends to be very quiet. Bright and modern rooms have air-conditioning and flat-screen TVs, though bathrooms are fairly small and could use updating. Wi-Fi is free and there’s a good pool, garden, and shop on-site. Guests wanting a more upscale option with a spa should consider Gurney's Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa, though expect to spend a lot more money.

Haven Montauk

Scene

Cool and quirky boutique motel

The Haven Montauk is one of many simple, limited-frills, bungalow-style motels, but it has a trendier atmosphere to it than many of its neighbors, with bright modern colors injected into the beach-themed decor. It's a bit bespoke Brooklyn by way of the Atlantic. The lobby of the hotel has a cool and quirky feel to it. Mismatched lengths of driftwood come together to create the front desk, and there's a large mirrored sideboard as well as a bench covered in bright aztec-print cushions. Green lawns and handsome shrubbery make up the hotel's grounds, and the fire pit is a popular, convivial hangout for guests in the summer (the hotel is only open seasonally). It’s a pet-friendly property and attracts a range of guests from families to couples and groups.

Location

Five-minute drive from downtown Montauk, walk to harbor bars and restaurants

Haven Montauk is located near Montauk Harbor, which is quieter than downtown Montauk, but still within walking distance of plenty of bars and restaurants, like popular Gosman's Dock. The harbor is just a five-minute walk from the property. The restaurants along the harbor mainly offer fresh seafood and some have live music in the evenings. It’s a five-minute drive south to Montauk hotspots like the booze-fueled Sloppy Tuna (the name says it all). The hotel is just across the street from a gorgeous sandy beach, which is one of the quietest in Montauk and sees very few people. The train station for service to New York City is a five-minute drive from the hotel, and trips can take nearly three hours. Drives into the city take around the same amount of time, though it varies depending on the season.

Rooms

Light, bright, and modern rooms with boutique accents

Rooms at the Haven are available as traditional rooms, Studios, One-, or Two-Bedroom Apartments, the latter of which feature kitchenettes. Rooms are bright, modern, and spacious. Decor is simple and stylish, with a white color scheme punctuated by bright pops of color like turquoise cushions or vivid cerise towels to liven things up. White Ikea-style contemporary furniture is complemented by funkier pieces like mod circle chairs with faux-fur throws. There are trendy accents throughout, like miniature potted succulents alongside bowls of shells and nautical artwork. Amenities include a mini-fridge, air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, free Wi-Fi, and coffeemakers. The bathrooms are less attractive -- the look is dated, have stand-up shower stalls, and are on the small side. Rooms don't have private balconies, but a bistro table and two chairs are provided out the front of every room so guests can sit on the deck outside.

Features

Attractive outdoor space, plus free breakfast pastries and Wi-Fi

There’s a good amount of outdoor space at the Haven. It has a small outdoor pool with a hammock, day beds, and lounge chairs on the surrounding grass. Music is played during the day, and staff provide an ice bucket for those who want to bring drinks down to the pool. Next to the pool is a garden area which has a range of chairs, garden sofas, and lounge chairs. In the evenings, the fire pit is lit -- a popular feature with guests -- and there’s also a barbecue grill for guests to use. Bikes can be hired free of charge from the hotel, and guests are welcome to use the bike rack for their own cycles if they wish. There’s a shop on-site selling everything from sunscreen to clothes, jewelry, and boogie boards. Coffee and pastries are provided free of charge in the reception every morning, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. Guests should keep in mind that the hotel is only open seasonally.
