Bottom Line

A colorful and modern boutique hotel close to all of Heraklion’s main attractions, Lato Boutique Hotel is a welcoming, stylish getaway for singles, couples, and older families interested in exploring both the main town and the rest of Crete. Rooms and suites are spacious and modern, with bright, contemporary decor, and higher-tier rooms even have private balconies with town or sea views. Some, however, are quite small and can get noisy. The hotel is home to three restaurants -- one with rooftop views; another is where the free, extensive buffet breakfast is served daily. There's also a bar, and the hotel has a small spa with a hot tub and a fitness room, and there are business facilities such as meeting rooms and a business center.

Lato Boutique Hotel

Scene

Colorful, artsy hotel with popular restaurants and a sophisticated crowd

The Lato Boutique Hotel is a sleek, clean-lined, modern hotel set behind a whimsical, if monochrome, facade that's brightened by neon strip-lighting. The lobby is small and bright, with geometric shapes and bold colors running through the decor, which consists of brown and orange sofas grouped into a couple seating areas. Each of the restaurants has a different style: the award-winning Brilliant restaurant is decorated in the same bold colors and geometric shapes, while the rooftop Herb's Garden is breezy and airy, with lots of white, plenty of herb plants, and a wooden deck to complement the views. The Aroma restaurant, where breakfast is served, has an updated museum-cafeteria feel to it. The hotel primarily attracts couples, older families, business guests, and solo travelers -- versus families with children or hard partiers.

Location

On a narrow street near Heraklion’s Venetian harbor, a short walk from the town’s main sights

Set on a narrow street near Heraklion’s picturesque Venetian harbor and a 10-minute walk from the ferry, Lato Boutique Hotel is located in the heart of the city, a 10-minute stroll from the many shops, museums, and restaurants at Heraklion’s central Lion square. Several sandy beaches are also within walking distance. As Crete is a relatively manageable island, sights like the party town of Malia and the Minoan ruins at Knossos are all within driving distance. The hotel can arrange airport transfers, and valet parking is available.

Rooms

Stylishly decorated with comfortable sofas, sliding screens to partition lounges and bedrooms, and spacious shower stalls

The Lato Boutique Hotel's 48 rooms and suites are outfitted with colorful, geometric, and whimsical decor that includes chocolate pinstripe curtains, sleek flooring, colorful sofas in some, brightly colored pillows and headboards, and chunky wooden tables and desks. Sliding screens in suites partition the lounge areas from bedrooms, while elongated shower stalls in the bathrooms offer extra space. Some higher-tier rooms have private balconies; Superior Sea View Rooms have panoramic views over the city’s Venetian harbor and fleet of colorful fishing boats. Accessed via a small separate elevator, rooms in the hotel’s annex are smaller and somewhat darker, but are a good choice for those who want to be more independent. Bathrooms are large and have combination shower/tubs and high-end toiletries. All rooms have flat-screen TVs, fully stocked minibar, and free Wi-Fi.
