Butterfly on Victoria

Butterfly on Victoria, part of a boutique chain of properties, opened in 2013 and still has a newish, trendy feel. The hotel occupies a narrow 26-story building in the heart of busy Causeway Bay, but its lobby offers some relief. Bare and minimalist, it features shiny floors in a pale hardwood, ultra-white ceilings, and an angular wooden unit topped with two iMac computers. The space is light-filled thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows, and the white marble reception counter features a tree sculpture covered with butterflies. The hallways leading to the elevators are done up in bright neon lights, and calligraphy by local artist Patrick Leung adds flair to the walls. The hotel's decor has a somewhat youthful vibe, but its location makes it popular with tourists (mainly couples) and business travelers of varying ages. 

Butterfly on Victoria is located in central Causeway Bay, just a few minutes walk from Tin Hau MTR subway station. Victoria Park, a Hong Kong landmark, is also a few minutes walk away, as well as many restaurants, cafes, bars, convenience stores, and shopping malls.

Guest room decor is modern and pretty minimalist, but with a good amount of artsy flair. Simple, pale-wood furniture consists only of bedside tables and long desks topped with 40-inch flat-screen TVs. Floors have black-and-white wavy-striped carpeting, while patterned gray-and-cream wallpaper covers the walls. A mirrored panel behind each bed is painted with a saying in decorative calligraphy, and small butterflies and a rose-shaped pillow top it off. A variety of pillows of differing sizes and levels of firmness are available, too.

Bathroom walls are made of frosted glass and don't always reach the ceiling, which might not suit all guests. Interiors are nicely tiled in light beige, with roomy walk-in showers that feature electronic gauges to regulate temperature. Other fittings include rectangular vessel sinks and large mirrors, and amenities like toiletries and hairdryers available.

All rooms are air-conditioned and have mini-fridges, electric kettles (not in all Superior rooms), safes, multimedia docking stations, and free Wi-Fi. A handy extra is the free 4G smartphone in each room, loaded with a city guide, unlimited data, and free local calls. Executive King Rooms have a few extras: capsule coffeemakers and a selection of bottled water. Rooms are on the small side, with the Superior Rooms covering an area of 160 square feet. The Deluxe Rooms are bigger, with 190 square feet of floor space, while the Executive Rooms are more spacious at 220 square feet. 

While Butterfly on Victoria is an upper-middle-range hotel, it offers very little in the way of extra features. There's no on-site restaurant or breakfast service. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, and two Mac computers are available for guest use in the lobby area. Equipment like external batteries for cell phones, selfie sticks, and battery-operated face fans are available from the front desk free of charge. Other services available include luggage storage, currency exchange, and tour-booking and airport shuttle assistance.
