Bottom Line

The Lan Kwai Fong Hotel is a simple, yet upscale, 33-floor property with a prime position in Hong Kong island's Center district. Its location means numerous surrounding shopping and dining options including SoHo and Lan Kwai Fong entertainment areas. Interior design is attractive Oriental-themed styling while dining comes in the form of an impressive two-Michelin-starred restaurant. While some rooms are small, others have harbor views and all provide free use of smart phones. Rates are certainly reasonable for the area, though for something a little more modern -- and cheaper -- take a look at the Holiday Inn Express Hong Kong Soho.

Oyster Hotel Review

Lan Kwai Fong Hotel @ Kau U Fong

Scene

This towering hotel nonetheless has a boutique feel, and Oriental-themed interiors throughout.

Although with a relatively small footprint, the towering and tiled facade of the Lan Kwai Fong Hotel soars dizzyingly into the sky. Stepping into the lobby, visitors first experience the Chinese theme that characterizes the interior design of the hotel throughout -- contemporary takes on Eastern art blend with traditional patterns and more modern, playful touches. The effect is original and attractive, giving the property an arty and boutique vibe -- though the lobby lounge does feel a little empty. As well as transporting guests to one of over 30 floors, the hotel's two elevators ferry visitors to a lovely and breezy open-sided terrace area on the sixth floor with wooden decking, red paper lanterns, and rows of potted bamboo (though views aren't that special).

The popular and well-known bar area of Lan Kwai Fong is also less than a 10 minutes' walk away, while the Sheung Wan MTR subway station is five minutes away on foot.

Rooms

Oriental-style decor with free smart phone loaners and some harbor views

The hotel has 162 rooms, all of which continue the Oriental-theme decor with Asian-style accents such as traditional Chinese patterning and Eastern-leaning carved wood furnishings. Connectivity is particularly impressiv,e with not only free Wi-Fi but the loan of smart phones with unlimited 3G access and calls to seven countries (including the UK, US, and Australia). Other technology includes iPod docks and flat-screen TVs with satellite channels that include CNN, BBC, and Bloomberg. Bathrooms are finished with colorful inset glass beads and have either standalone showers or shower/tub combos. Some higher-level rooms feature partial views of the harbor, while some suites even provide panoramic vistas from small furnished balconies -- though most views are limited. Typical of Hong Kong hotels, some of the rooms are tiny and some of the decor does feel dated.
