Bottom Line

Oustside the city center In the industrial district of Diamond Hill in Kowloon East, the upscale modern 32-story Pentahotel Hong Kong, Kowloon stands in contrast to the surrounding factories and older buildings. Yet it manages to integrate many elements of Old Hong Kong -- vintage photographs, drawings, and road signs -- into its stylish decor of dark woods, red brick, glass, and steel. The hotel, which has a seasonal outdoor pool, gym, and meeting space, packs a reception area, cafe, bar, and restaurant -- modeled like a food court with Hong Kong specialties and a pizza bar -- into a single area, the Pentalounge. The Pentahotel's 695 rooms, with their textured wood, are chic but on the small side -- they include iPod docks, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and rainfall showers in the sleek bathrooms. Those looking to stay closer to the action might want to  check out the four-pearl Eaton, Hong Kong, which has comparable rates.

Oyster Hotel Review

Pentahotel Hong Kong, Kowloon

Scene

Warehouse-chic in an industrial neighborhood

The dimly lit Pentalounge combines seductive lighting with an industrial-chic decor of exposed brick and unfinished hardwood floors. Dark-wood paneling and black stencils evoking Hong Kong street life decorate interior walls. The ambience is young, funky, and upbeat, and guests can freely mingle with locals, who frequent the hotel's restaurants for lunch.

Location

In an industrial area near the old airport

North of the city's former airport (now a vast construction site), the hotel is in the Diamond Hill section of Kowloon East, a gritty area but its popular local restaurants bring it to life at night. It's at least 30 minutes by public transportation from such Kowloon attractions as Tsim Sha Tsui (the ocean terminal known for its fashionable boutiques) and the Mongkok bird garden, but it's about an eight-minute drive to Wng Tai Sin Temple and within a seven-minute walk of the Mikiki shopping mall. The Diamond Hill MTR Station is a 10-minute walk from the hotel. Hong Kong International Airport is about a 35-minute drive west.

Rooms

Small but stylish rooms and bathrooms with rainfall showerheads

The 695 rooms have a trendy ambience, enhanced by well-placed lighting and striking black-and-white wall prints. Standard Pentarooms are on the small side but have roomy desks, open-style clothing racks, and box shelves with ample storage. All rooms come with free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, mini-fridges, tea/coffeemakers, and robes. Pentagrand Rooms (suites) add large sitting areas with an additional TV, separated from the bedroom by curtained glass walls. The sleek, black-tiled bathrooms have walk-in rainfall showers.

Features

Outdoor pool, game rooms, restaurant, pizza bar, and fitness center

Most of the hotel's stand-out features are integrated into the Pentalounge -- a flowing space that houses a front desk, lounge, and a restaurant modeled like a food court -- rather than a traditional lobby. Two game rooms have a Wii, a billiards table, a foosball table, board games with couches, numerous vending machines, and an Internet corner and music station. The food-court-style restaurant -- Eatstreet -- serves a variety of Chinese and Hong Kong specialties from four different counters, and there's also a pizza bar. A lovely blue mosaic-tile pool sits amid a sundeck with loungers and umbrellas, and the fitness center has cardio bikes, treadmills, and weight-training machines. There are also five modern meeting rooms, and free shuttle service service to nearby shopping areas. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property.
