Bottom Line

The 29-room Residence G Hong Kong is a hip, upper-mid-range hotel set in a relatively quiet corner of Kowloon's bustling Tsim Sha Tsui district. The vibe is smart and contemporary throughout, from its funky street-level cafe to third-floor lobby lounge and open-roof terrace. While standard Good Rooms are typically small, in-room tech includes wide-screen TVs, fast Wi-Fi, and handy smartphones with free Internet roaming. Space is a bit tight, but design is smart with large floor-to-ceiling windows and clean lines that provide a sense of space. While not the easiest location to find and lacking any on-site health facilities, it's certainly one of the coolest hotels around and tucked away from the nearby din and hubbub.

Oyster Hotel Review

Residence G Hong Kong (by Hotel G)

Scene

Hip, contemporary hotel with designer interiors and young vibe

With its dark and unassuming warehouse-style facade there's something instantly hip and now about the upper-mid-range Residence G. While its chic and funky cafe is on ground level, access to the lobby is through the eatery or via a small entrance around the side of the graffiti-lined alley. A pair of elevators lead to the third-floor reception area -- a smart and trendy lounge area with contemporary design furnishings and finished in cool grays with several attractive clusters of seating. This floor also opens out to an open-topped terrace providing hotel guests -- mostly vacationing couples -- with a simple semi-outdoor space overlooking the street. Opened in 2015, this place has a young, fashionable 21st-century feel -- which it pulls off with aplomb across all 18 floors.

Location

Relatively quiet spot in bustling Tsim Sha Tsui district

This hotel is located in the northeast corner of the popular tourist and shopping area of Tsim Sha Tsui in the south of Kowloon. Compared to most of the district, the hotel's surrounds are fairly quiet and away from the main hustle and bustle, though its also one of the trickier addresses to find in the area. Knutsford Terrace -- a pleasant pedestrianized area full of cafes and alfresco eateries -- is just a few minutes' walk away while the hubbub of Nathan Road is about 10 minutes away on foot. Tsim Tsaui Shi MRT subway station is also 10 minutes' walk away and Hung Hom Station is around five minutes by cab. The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is also just a block away and the green expanse of Kowloon Park is within walking distance. It's about half an hour drive from Hong Kong International Airport during good traffic.

Rooms

Sleek rooms with free high-speed Wi-Fi, wide-screen TVs, and smartphone with roaming

The hotel categorizes its 29 rooms as either Good, Greater, or Greatest. All are styled in clean, contemporary decor with natural wood flooring and a black, white, and gray color scheme. The main difference between categories is size, with standard Good Rooms being typically on the small side -- although semi open-plan bathrooms, floor-to-ceiling windows that allow in ample natural light, and open wardrobes do make the most of the space. High-tech amenities include free super-fast Wi-Fi, wide-screen TVs, and the loan of a smartphone with free calls and mobile Internet. DVD players and PlayStations are also available for loan, while a choice of pillows and bedside light panel provide some comfy touches. Loft-style accommodation is also available with some self-catering facilities.

Features

Hip cafe-cum-wine bar and furnished terrace

The hotel's trendy-looking Scarlett Cafe is open for breakfast -- offering a selection of freshly baked items -- as well as lunch and dinner either at street level or in its first-floor dining room. In the evening the mood changes to a wine bar popular with both guests and locals. The lobby lounge provides a place to work or relax with a drink on the terrace, while MacBooks are also available on loan. High-speed Wi-Fi is also available throughout the building, however there's nothing in the way of health or fitness facilities on-site.
