The Upper House

The Upper House has made a name for itself among Hong Kong's massive array of luxury hotels since it opened in 2010. And while we often find buzzed-about hotels to be overhyped, there is little to fault at this stunning property. Come here for the urban-oasis vibe, which rivals other posh newcomers to the Hong Kong hotel scene like The Kerry and The Murray. There's a lot to appreciate here, and the curated artwork -- all of which is subtle, but eye-catching -- tells a story that moves travelers from the earth into the sky. And while the art is a beautiful addition to the property, the building itself is packed with striking architectural details that do more than their part to make any guest want to linger. This calm vibe and the hotel's impeccable style draws locals and travelers from across the city as well, particularly to the sought-after tables in Cafe Gray Deluxe as well as exclusive events in The Library, like talks and socials during Art Basel Hong Kong. Well-heeled leisure and business travelers tend to call this tranquil property home when they're in town, and the above-it-all atmosphere and setting is easily worth the price.

The Upper House takes its name quite literally, with a perch that's relatively high above the city. Clustered with other upscale and luxury hotels and attached to the Pacific Place mall, the property sits on a hillside overlooking Hong Kong Island below. Most guests use taxis and car services to get around, though the Admiralty MTR station is only a five-minute walk from the hotel. It's not the liveliest area of Hong Kong, though that generally suits the hotel's guests, who are here for a tranquil urban escape. Soho is a five- to 10-minute car ride to Soho for trendy dining and nightlife. It's also where you'll find PMQ, the former policemen's barracks that's been converted into chic designer boutiques. The indie shops of the Star Street Precinct are only a 10-minute walk from the hotel for more shopping opportunities. It's a 30- to 45-minute ride to the airport from here, or about an hour by using the MTR and Airport Express train.

With an array of suites and single-room studios, the hotel offers an array of configurations, all tricked out in soothing neutral hues plus an abundance of luxe hardwood (oak or bamboo). Subtle pops of green and purple complement the clean, minimalist lines found on furniture and in the architectural details of the rooms. Even entry-level Studio70 units have banks of windowside seating that make taking in the city and harbor views one of the many pleasant features on offer. Additionally, you'll find 42-inch flat-screen TVs, Nespresso machines, free minibars and snacks (the hotel calls these Maxi Bars and they exclude wine and Champagne), individually controlled air-conditioning, down comforters, and free Wi-Fi. Higher-category suites include separate living areas as well as separate dressing areas. Bathrooms are stunning and spa-inspired across the board, with separate rainfall showers and soaking tubs in all categories. However, the Upper Suites and Penthouses have particularly amazing bathrooms. In these, the centerpiece tubs face walls of windows perfect for taking in Hong Kong's stunning nighttime skyline. Rooms stay silent at night, which is a boon in busy Hong Kong.

With its boutique size, it's perhaps no surprise that The Upper House offers a pared-down list of extras. However, all that's provided helps elevate the experience of staying here. That starts with the hotel's restaurant, Cafe Gray Deluxe, which is on the top floor. Reaching this stunning dining space means passing some of the most striking architectural details found on the property, and only adds to the breathtaking experience of stepping into the window-lined restaurant and taking in the city views. Reservations are strongly recommended for lunch and dinner. Breakfast is also served here and can be added to room packages.

The Library is where guests cozy up with a book or take care of any work throughout the day. It's staffed with its own concierges who can take care of any needs, or even order you a cup of tea. In the evenings, especially during Hong Kong's busy events like Art Basel, the space also hosts talks and gatherings.

While there is no dedicated spa, treatments are offered in the privacy of your room. There is a complete gym with modern equipment and great city views, but the hotel is lacking a pool. Free yoga sessions also take place on The Lawn on select days. A house car is available for local trips, and airport transfers complete with hot towels can also be booked. Guests are personally escorted to their rooms and explained all of the hotel's features and even a rundown of the art collection on the way. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
