The two-pearl Yesinn Causeway Bay is a budget hostel that's close to Causeway Bay's shopping, dining, and public transportation. Dorms are either for females only or mixed, and there also are a few private rooms for one to three people. Beds are stacked three high, but each comes with a reading light, three-prong outlet, and a privacy curtain. Guests may have to wait for use of the bathroom in the dorm-style rooms. The rooftop garden is a popular space, as is the lounge in the lobby with a massage chair. In pricey Hong Kong, this is a solid value option for young travelers on a tight budget, but guests wanting more style could consider Hop Inn, though it's a bit more expensive.
Scene
Cozy communal spaces for hanging out inside and out
Two buildings make up this hostel, with the private rooms housed in a separate building. Like most hostels, the vibe is youthful and friendly. The lobby is a bit quirky and fun, with a massage chair and black plush sofas where guests can hang out and relax or watch the flat-screen TV. The outdoor rooftop terrace is a cozy space with potted plants and plenty of seating. It's a nice place to hang out and meet people from all over. Graffiti covers many of the walls in the building, and even the ceiling in the lobby. As is also typical in a hostel, signs are posted throughout to remind guests of the rules. The place is geared toward young backpackers and other budget-minded travelers who don't mind sharing close quarters with strangers.
Location
Great location in Causeway Bay close to public transportation
This hostel is located in Causeway Bay, surrounded by huge buildings all packed together in typical Hong Kong fashion. It's a busy area, and traffic can be difficult during peak hours. The area is filled with malls, shops, and restaurants -- in fact, this is one of the prime retail areas in Hong Kong and includes everything from international retailers to bespoke designers. There's plenty to do within a minute's walk in any direction. The Causeway Bay MTR Station is less than five minutes away on foot, as is a bus station. Victoria Park, the city's biggest green space, can be reached on foot in about 10 minutes. Hong Kong International Airport is about 30 minutes away by car, or an hour by train.
Rooms
Dorm-style or private rooms with bunk beds stacked three high
This hostel offers a mix of dorm-style rooms and private rooms. Dorm rooms are either female only or mixed. They feature bunk beds stacked three high, each shielded by a white curtain for privacy and with its own reading light and three-prong outlet. Bedding is brightly colored blue, green, red, and yellow, and modern art on the walls adds a little visual interest. Lockers are provided for personal items, and there is a shared sink in the room. Ceiling fans help the air-conditioning keep things cool. The en-suite bathroom is small and basic, with a single toilet, square sink, and stand-up shower -- waits can be long in the 21-person dorm for the one bathroom. The three-person private room also has a three-high bunk bed against a bright yellow wall in a long, narrow space. The en-suite bathroom is small, but it's clean and has a tiled shower and walls. The one-person private room is not designed for claustrophobic guests, as it's quite tight. The bed is elevated with a small desk and bright yellow chair underneath. There's also a wall-mounted TV at the foot of the bed. Its en-suite bathroom is -- not surprisingly -- compact, and the one we saw showed signs of age like rust and mildew. Towels can be rented.
Features
Computer station, shared kitchen, laundry room
This hotel has a fairly typical set of offerings for hostels in its category. There's a small computer station in the lobby that provides two computers and a printer for guests to use. A communal kitchen area in the back has free coffee and tea, as well as a sink, water cooler, refrigerator, and microwave -- it's tiny and the subject of a decent amount of complaints from guests. Beer, wine, and other beverages can be purchased there. The laundry room is in the basement and is a bit grungy, with stains on the floor and on the ironing board cover. Wi-Fi is free throughout, and the massage chair in the lobby is a hit.
