Location trumps luxury at these 11 beachfront bungalows sitting just above the sand on the picturesque North Shore. Sure, the bungalows are modest, amenities are zero, and service is minimal. But a beautiful beach is just outside the door, as are hammocks and grills. And Oahu's most famous surfing spots and a charming surfer town, Haleiwa, are just down the street. Large but modest, bungalows have full kitchens but small TVs and no air conditioning. They're utilitarian, but right on (or just off) the beach, and every bungalow has its own yard area and grill. Ke Iki Beach is long, wide, and uncrowded -- the sandy antithesis of beaches in Waikiki, and the perfect place for some alone time with a special someone. It's bordered by volcanic rocks and has views of lush green mountains. Made up of just 30 hippy-chic cottages in secluded Treasure Beach, Jake's is one of Jamaica's most romantic hotels. Guests come to unplug -- there's no phone, Internet, or TV in the cottages -- but given its gorgeous Driftwood Spa, painting and yoga classes, and excellent food, it's also a superb value. The Restaurant at Jake's serves a rotating menu of Jamaican dishes at all three meals. All items are made with locally farmed produce and good quality meats (a sign in the front reads"support your local farmer"). The open-air yoga studio on top of the Driftwood Spa overlooks the ocean. Sunrise and sunset yoga classes are offered on the weekends, along with unique classes like "Reggae-lates." Each of the rustic, quirky cottages has its own, unique design. A modest property that prides itself on being the "Most Hawaiian Resort," the 430-room Kaanapali Beach Hotel sits right on Kaanapali's four-mile beach. More affordable than many nearby resorts, this low-key hotel has a great tiki bar, free Hawaiian activities, and live nightly entertainment. The hotel's location -- the middle of Kaanapali's four-mile stretch of white sand beach -- is one of its best assets. The beach directly in front of the hotel is far less crowded than other parts of Kaanapali Beach farther south, closer to the area's mega resorts. The Tiki Bar & Grill serves great drinks, fast, and it also hosts free nightly live music and hula performances. New bedding, upholstery, and colonial-style furniture in the ocean view guest rooms create a modern but still distinctly Hawaiian atmosphere. The Punta Cana Hotel's 202 modest suites are all part of the most luxurious resort development in the Dominican Republic. It includes the La Cana golf course, the Six Senses spa, a nature preserve, eight high-profile restaurants, horse stables, and one of the best beaches in the country. Deluxe suites (the standard room type), located along the beach, are simple but comfortable, and have been updated since our stay with new bedding, decor, and flat-screen TVs. The breakfast buffet is included in the price of the room, but the resort's eight restaurants can be somewhat pricey. La Choza is located right on the beach. The 70-room Treehouse is about the most relaxed hotel in Jamaica, almost to a fault. There's only a skeleton crew on staff at night, and the rooms feature nothing but an old TV and a bar of soap. But most guests don't seem to care, once they're swinging on a porch hammock overlooking Jamaica's best beach. Plus, great bars and restaurants are right next door. The hotel is located right on Negril's Seven Mile Beach, widely hailed as the best beach in Jamaica. The water is sparkling turquoise from afar, crystal clear up close, warm, and never crowded. Guests have easy access to plenty of chairs, a water-sports tent, and a jerk pit and beach bar. Rooms are located in round, wooden rondel buildings reminiscent of old beachside summer houses--not actual tree houses. A balcony or terrace stretches around every room. Each has its own table, chairs, and comfy hammock swing. The beach bar serves staples like hamburgers, pasta, and jerk chicken right by the water. In Miami, finding a nice, affordable hotel right on the sand isn't easy, and finding one where you'd want to take your significant other is even harder. Enter the Townhouse, with its bright, stylish rooms, prompt service, rooftop bar, and direct beach access. Sleek rooms are outfitted all in white, with little splashes of red. With a great view of the beach on one end and the lights of downtown on the other, the rooftop bar is a great place for couples to grab a drink together.
