Bottom Line

The 187-room Anantara Resort and Spa Hua Hin is a polished luxury retreat located a short drive from the center of Hua Hin. The resort is hidden away in lush gardens, and features two swimming pools, a spa and fitness center, and an excellent array of restaurants and bars offering everything from fine Italian to authentic Thai cuisines. Elegant rooms feature shiny hardwood floors, contemporary Thai silks and artwork, though some show a bit of wear. The landscaped grounds and peaceful spa are a terrific urban escape, though the beach is not the nicest. Guests may want to consider the Intercontinental Hua Hin Resort, which offers luxury toiletries in guest room bathrooms, though rates will be higher.

Anantara Hua Hin Resort

Scene

Lush tropical resort with vintage accents and features

The Anantara Resort and Spa Hua Hin feels both sophisticated and charming, not to mention very exclusive and private, for the many couples and families who pass through. The resort is hidden down a long driveway, surrounded by orange walls with bas relief carvings of elephants and other Southeast Asian motifs. The lobby and main building are vintage traditional Thai, with dark teak wood dominating everything from floors to furniture plus Thai textiles, cushions, and silks across seating throughout the space. There are Buddhist sculptures, an old gramophone, and plenty of stylish touches. Bridges lead across carp ponds throughout the lush tropical grounds and there are wooden open-air sala huts to escape the rain or sun. Private niches with lounge chairs and other seating are set on lagoon pools surrounded by tropical foliage. This attractive property -- including the landscaped gardens, spa, and architecture -- was designed by Bill Bensley, an American designer who has lived in Thailand for decades and is one of the most famed hotel designers in Southeast Asia.

Location

Isolated property on beautiful grounds, a 10-minute drive into Hua Hin town

The Anantara Resort and Spa Hua Hin is a real hideaway. While the resort sits just off the main highway about five miles out of Hua Hin, it hides behind a long protected entrance and is surrounded by jungle. With plenty of ponds, trees, and greenery, it's easy to forget one is anywhere near a city, although in reality it's just a 10-minute drive into town. Unfortunately, there aren't many other restaurants or shops outside the hotel, and trips into town require a car, expensive taxi trip, or the hotel's shuttle service (which operates on a limited schedule). The beach fronting the hotel is not Hua Hin's finest strip of sand, but there is a small sandy area with lounge chairs just above it. There are several golf courses in the area, including Black Mountain Golf Club and Palm Hills, both about 20 minutes away by car. The Cicada Weekend Night Market is a 25-minute drive from the hotel and the closest airports are back in Bangkok, which takes around two hours to reach by road, depending on traffic.

Rooms

Elegant rooms with wood floors, Thai silks, and large balconies

Rooms at the Anantara Hua Hin are spread out and feel quite private. All of them have fine polished wood floors, stylish contemporary Thai silks and artwork, and come with ceiling fans and relaxing furnished balconies. Some rooms are far more spacious than others, and the Deluxe Garden Room that we visited showed a bit of wear on furniture and floors. Furniture throughout is hardwood, some of which is simply carved, and windows have wooden shutters. All rooms include flat-screen TVs with cable channels, safes, minibars, free Wi-Fi, and electric kettles for making tea and coffee. The higher category rooms and suites have sea views, along with Anantara Club privileges like all day tea and coffee, snacks, and free cocktail happy hour at the Lagoon Bar. These rooms also come with DVD/CD players and iPod docking stations, as well as large private verandas. Bathrooms are fine, but slightly dated, with bright aqua tiles in some rooms and terrazzo shower/tub combos in other rooms plus generic toiletries and granite countertops.

Features

Multiple restaurants and bars, two outdoor pools, beach access, and wellness facilities

While the Anantara Resort and Spa Hua Hin is a short drive from the city, guests really don't need to go out, as the resort has so many excellent features on site. There are plenty of great dining options here, starting with Italian Baan Thalia, which serves stylish and authentic Italian favorites including fine meats and wood-fire oven pizzas in a rustic setting. There is also Rim Naam, which does Thai curries and other local specialties in an open-air sala style restaurant. Sai Thong is a romantic al fresco eatery, set up right at the beach with bamboo tables on the sand, serving a fresh seafood barbecue when the weather is good, and Issara Cafe is the resort's breakfast niche, serving scrumptious buffets for guests. Breakfast is only included with some bookings. For drinking, there is the Loy Nam Pool Bar and the Lagoon Bar, both of which have rustic thatched roof huts with mixologists whipping up cocktails and cold drinks. For something a bit more suave, the Sala Siam near the lobby has chic design and atmospheric lighting, and offers drinks as well as tapas and snacks. Anantara Club guests have access to upgraded features like free coffee, tea, and cocktails throughout the day.

The Anantara Hua Hin has a main swimming pool with thatched grass roof huts surrounding it and a children's pool. The more exclusive Garden Pool has a jetted area and sits in a quiet garden adjacent to a pond with lily pads -- the area is meant for adults. The adjacent Anantara Spa is a chic facility, and features all types of funky and creative designs from artsy outdoor rain showers to sculptural pieces in addition to its fine treatment rooms and services. The Anantara has a fitness center, a tennis court, and even table tennis, along with a library full of books and DVDs, not to mention a large and free kids' club. The resort also has a beach, though the area isn't the nicest strip of sand.

The hotel runs a scheduled shuttle service into Hua Hin, though it's only free for certain room categories. Wi-Fi is free throughout the resort. Babysitting, laundry, and dry cleaning services can be arranged.
