Bottom Line

This family-owned, 38-room value property is open year-round and popular with return guests for its home-away-from-home feel. With friendly service, affordable rates, and a welcoming vibe, Hostal Mari has become a favorite in San Antonio. While Standard Rooms have classic, old-fashioned furniture and decor, the upgraded Superior and Premium Rooms are modern and fresh. Premiums also have extra features like large terraces and sleek bathrooms. A continental buffet breakfast and half-board (or a la carte) options are available at the popular attached restaurant and bar. Outside of a sparsely decorated and dated lounge area, there's not much public space. Fun extras include jazz performances and bike rentals, but no housekeeping on Sundays and no pool on-site can be deal breakers for some. For a value property with a pool, check out Hostal Tarba down the street.

Hostal Mari

Scene

Family-owned value spot with a homey vibe

Hostal Mari is a family-owned property where visitors can still catch the original grandfather and grandmother owners roaming around the reception area or kitchen. Much of the staff are family, and the overall welcoming vibe translates into several return guests who are known on a first-name basis. The personal service and homey feeling draws a lot of single travelers, plus many German, Spanish, and Italian couples and groups of friends in their late-20s to late-40s.

This '60s building undergoes continual renovations, though the most significant have included an overhaul of the reception area and the attached S Mari restaurant. In 2012, the hotel's Premium Rooms were built, followed by 2013 renovations in the Superior Rooms. Guests are now greeted with stylish, contemporary decor that has an industrial edge, and great decor details in the restaurant like wood panels made from real wood chips, rusted metal-style tile floors, and surprisingly chic cylinder light fixtures in copper and light green.

Unlike several spots in town, Hostal Tarba is open all year.

Location

Quiet but convenient setting in San Antonio that's walking distance to the beach

Hostal Mari is located just an eight-minute walk from the entrance of San Antonio, and it's surrounded by a good variety of shops, small cafe restaurants, a laundromat, and a few bars. The large Mercadona supermarket that sells groceries, electronics, and booze is a seven-minute walk away, and there's an organic shop just across the road. Calo des Moro and Calo Gracio beaches are within a 10- to 15-minute walk.

Rooms

Dated Standard Rooms, but upgrades to contemporary Superiors and Premiums

All 38 of Hostal Mari's singles, doubles, and triples come with AC and heat, but don't expect phones, mini-fridges, or free safes in Standards or Superior Rooms. Bathrooms in these categories are spotless but dated, and come with shower/tub combos, hairdryers, and packets of shampoo and shower gel. Beds are firm, and room configurations often find multiple-occupancy beds practical or literally side-by-side and queen-sized beds simply two twins pushed together. While Superior and Premium Rooms are fresh and modern, the Standard Rooms are old-fashioned, largely due to the dated wood furniture and marble-style tile floors. Anyone looking for a fresher color palette, balcony, and contemporary furniture should consider the small price difference for an upgrade to the Superior Rooms.

Premium Rooms come with extra perks like mini-fridges, automatic blinds, and large terraces with two personal loungers. These rooms also look nicer thanks to the pale ceramic wood-style floors, white bamboo, and the sophisticated olive-green-and-beige color scheme. Guests in these rooms will also get a free bottle of water, tea-and-coffee-making facilities, and free use of the safe. Premium bathrooms are more stylish with sliding glass doors, rainfall showerheads, and dual sinks, though there are no upgraded amenities.

For those considering a single room, the old-fashioned Standard Rooms offer more space.

Features

Popular cafe open late, though slim on public spaces and freebies

Some room rates include a continental breakfast buffet with a few hot items, and half-board options are available. Guests on half-board are given a menu of the day from the attached S Mari restaurant, and it's a great option during the winter months when several stores and restaurants are closed. A longtime local favorite for homemade dishes and family recipes, S Mari was renovated and reopened in 2016 with a modern menu. The new space has contemporary industrial decor with rusted-metal tile floors, though it still sports an original painted mural on a back wall that dates back to 1969. Open early until after midnight, the kitchen closes during the day (between 4 p.m. and 8p.m.during our visit), while the bar still serves drinks. On Thursdays, guests can mingle with locals during live jazz performances in the evening.

There isn't much public space at this hotel, though several longer-stay guests, usually in town on business, tend to hang out in the sparse lounge area at the entrance of the Superior Rooms. This area consists of a few dated tables and chairs, TV, and a small pay-to-use computer station. Printing is available from the front desk. Luggage storage and wi-fi are free, and a few bikes are available to rent for a fee.

Note that keys must be left at the 24-hour reception when exiting the building and there is no housekeeping on Sundays.
