Bottom Line

The San Miguel Park & Esmeralda Mar Apartments is a budget-friendly apartment complex located in the picturesque and peaceful San Miguel Bay. All 84 units have simple kitchenettes plus terraces or balconies, and those on higher floors have lovely sea views (though lots of steps to get there). Unfortunately, the style is almost entirely dated. San Miguel's lovely sandy beach is a five-minute walk away, and there are two pools on-site plus poolside activities. Buffet dining is mediocre and the hotel's restaurants get busy, which is a bummer as there's not many alternatives nearby. Still, this is a fine option for those wanting a simple apartment-hotel with an all-inclusive option, but travelers in search of better views and more facilities for kids may want to consider the Cartago Hotel instead.

San Miguel Park & Esmeralda Mar Apartments

Scene

Simple and quiet apartment complex that mostly sees families

As the name suggests, San Miguel Park & Esmeralda Mar Apartments were once two neighboring properties, now joined as one. First impressions are nice here, with a tidy Mediterranean-style whitewashed facade lined with small trees and potted shrubbery. Inside, though, things are a bit more plain. Check-in takes places in a small reception area, which features a wall of exposed hillside rock on which most of the property is built. The dozen or so apartment blocks are set in grounds that slope up the side of the valley, making for plenty of steps as well as some rewarding views of the sea.

The property is mostly peaceful and relaxed with a friendly vibe, and an enthusiastic animation team provides activities and entertainment around one pool; the other is reserved for those looking for some peace and quiet. Though it's a particularly family-friendly hotel, it is also popular with couples and the occasional group of vacationing friends, though older or less mobile guests might struggle with the hilly layout and numerous stairs.

Location

Hillside setting, a five-minute stroll from San Miguel Bay's picturesque beach

The complex is located along the bottom of a hillside nestled in a lush valley that encloses picturesque San Miguel Bay. Set on the quieter north side of Ibiza island, there's little in the way of eating and drinking within walking distance aside from a few simple restaurants near the shore. The pretty, sandy beach is just around five minutes away on foot, while other nearby natural attractions include the Calo des Multons cove and Cova de Can Marca caves, both about 15 minutes away on foot. Local buses connects to a variety of spots around the island, including Ibiza Town and Es Canar, both in around 30 to 40 minutes. Ibiza Airport is located on the opposite side of the island and will take approximately 30 minutes to reach half by car.

Rooms

Studio and multi-room apartments with balconies or terraces, some with sea views

The property has 84 studio, one-, and two-bedrooms apartments, all decorated in a simple, rustic style that will appear dated to most eyes. Expect to see colorful patterned fabrics, tile floors, and pine furnishings. Lots of colors -- from the varnish on furniture to the walls -- help keep things bright. Units are clean, with a straightforward homely feel, though many show signs of wear in places. That being said, there are some gestures at modernizing the look, and some bathrooms have contemporary fixtures like wall-mounted toilets, while certain rooms -- like the bedroom in the Superior Sea View Apartments that we visited -- are done with more appealing fabrics and furniture.

Open-plan living rooms include dining areas as well as kitchenettes with microwaves, gas or electric ranges, and mini-fridges. All units also have air-conditioning and 32-inch flat-screen TVs with DVD players, though there are only a couple English-language news channels and Wi-Fi isn't available in the apartments. Glass doors slide open to simply-furnished balconies or terraces, and apartments higher up feature sea views (but require more steps to reach). Bathrooms are functional and well-maintained, with wall-mounted hairdryers, simple toiletries, and shower/tub combos or walk-in showers.

Features

Buffet restaurant with all-inclusive plans available plus two pools and a tennis court

Although units have cooking facilities, there's also the option of taking meals at the hotel's buffet restaurant, where breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included for those on the all-inclusive plan (breakfast-only and half-board plans are also available). Despite extending to a poolside terrace, the dining area is on the small side for the size of the property and can get crowded. Additionally, reviews are mixed regarding food quality and variety. The Bar Esmeralda Mar is also open for drinks and snacks, with a terrace overlooking the other pool. The hotel runs a restaurant on the beach serving seafood and tapas as well.

The Esmeralda Mar pool is the quieter of the hotel's two swimming options, while the San Miguel Park Pool has poolside activities plus a whirlpool tub and separate kids' pool. Lounge chairs are plentiful and guests receive discounts for sunbeds on the beach as well as free kayaking. A tennis court is also available for those looking to stay active outside the water. The hotel hosts regular live entertainment and free (but slow) Wi-Fi is offered around the bar areas.
