Bottom Line

The 111-room Simbad Hotel is a three-pearl property set on the waterfront overlooking the north end of Ibiza's Talamanca Bay. The surrounding area is generally quiet and relaxed -- a far cry from the bustle of Ibiza Town a 10-minute drive away. Public spaces are mostly modern, though rooms -- with blue patterned bedspreads and matching curtains -- remain on the dated side. Nonetheless, it's all about the sea views here, and half of the rooms, the restaurant, and the outdoor pool all overlook the water. Those preferring to be a little closer to town and with direct beach access should take a look at Hotel Argos on the south side of the bay.

Simbad Hotel

Scene

This mid-range, waterfront hotel has a relaxed vibe and is popular with vacationing couples.

The Simbad Hotel underwent a total overhaul in 2007, plus minor refurbishments since, to help give the place a modern feel. The reception area is sleek and understated, with clean lines in glass, wood, and metal, and an adjacent terrace offering gorgeous sea views. The lobby has bright red chairs alongside orange curtains on one side, and more subdued brown sofas on the other. Several paintings depicting traditional island life are pleasant touches. To the rear, overlooking a small marina and the bay, is a terrace and swimming pool separated from the property by a seafront footpath. However, hallways and rooms look dated and a single elevator services the hotel's four floors. Clientele leans largely toward couples, mostly comprising British and Spanish vacationers, plus the occasional family.

Location

Set on the quiet north end of Talamanca Bay, a 10-minute drive from Ibiza Town

The hotel is located at the north end of the sweeping Talamanca Bay, in a peaceful and low-key area a few minutes' walk from its long stretch of white sandy beach. While there are a handful of restaurants, bars, and shops in the immediate surrounds, the lively center of Ibiza Town is a 10-minute drive away. One of the island's most renowned clubs, Pacha, is a five-minute car ride away. The Marina Botafoch is a 15-minute walk down the coast, where there are ferries that connect to Ibiza Town and the island of Formentera. Ibiza Airport is a 15- to 20-minute drive away.

Rooms

Half of the rooms feature furnished balconies with superb views over the bay

The 111 rooms don't live up to the contemporary vibe of the rest of the hotel; the simplistic wood furnishings, blue-patterned fabrics, and textured walls feel rather dated. However, all rooms open to furnished balconies -- half with impressive bay views, the other overlooking the street and buildings. Amenities include mini-fridges with non-alcoholic drinks, flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, and free Wi-Fi (with decent speed), though rooms lack tea/coffee facilities and safes aren't free. Bathrooms are well-maintained, with wall-mounted hairdryers, shower/tub combos, and sachet toiletries.

Features

An outdoor pool with bay views and another heated indoor pool

The outdoor pool is on the small side, in addition to lacking a bar or waiter service, but it does enjoy a fine position overlooking the water. There's also a small heated indoor pool with massage jets in the hotel's spa area, which also has a whirlpool tub, sauna, and a tiny gym -- though no spa treatments. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property and there's a computer in the lobby for guest use. The hotel's Mediterranean restaurant serves a well-reviewed breakfast buffet that includes fresh-squeezed orange juice, as well as buffet-style dinner. The modern space also offers a la carte lunch and dinner, and has an open-air terrace.
