Bottom Line

High on a hill with spectacular views over Galini Bay, three-pearl Hotel Eden Rock sits above a busy road and opposite a lovely beach, a half-hour drive from the laid-back town of lerapetra. The 100 rooms are simple, but come with balconies and most have gorgeous views of the sea or countryside. On-site amenities include a big pool with a poolside bar, a disco-bar, and plenty of children's amenities, including a playground, a playroom, and a kid's pool. Half-board (breakfast and dinner) options are available at the on-site restaurant, but guests wanting to go into town will need a car, as the hotel is a bit remote.

Hotel Eden Rock

Scene

Quiet property popular with families and older couples

Built on the side of a mountain, with gorgeous views of the arid countryside, Eden Rock attracts older couples and families who appreciate its quiet atmosphere and are not bothered by the limited entertainment options on-site. Common areas include a small lobby with marble floors and a flat-screen TV as well as a lounge area with a fireplace and long sofas. The grounds are covered with grassy areas and numerous palm trees as well as small parasols provide shade, and there are several scenic mountain paths that lead from the hotel into the surrounding countryside.

Location

Overlooking a busy road and a small sandy beach in the suburb of Agia Fotia

Hotel Eden Rock is a half-hour drive from the cafes, restaurants, museums and other attractions of the small resort of lerapetra, and it takes around the same amount of time to reach the pretty resort of Makri Gialos. The spectacular traditional mountain village of Agios Stefanos is a 40-minute drive away. Overlooking a small sandy beach, this family hotel is also a good base for day trips to visit other local attractions, including the Minoan palace of Kato Zakros and the tropical beach of Vai, both of which take an hour and forty minutes to reach by car. The Heraklion Airport is just under two hours away by car.

Rooms

Clean, plain rooms with mountain or pool views and furnished balconies

Spread over two buildings on a steep mountain slope, Eden Rock’s 100 rooms and suites are simple, with a predominantly white color scheme with touches of blue. Rooms have panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, the pool area, or out to Galini Bay. Family Rooms have double or twin beds plus sofa beds, and Family Suites are similar but slightly larger. All rooms have furnished balconies or terraces and tube-style TVs, and some guests have noted that the beds are hard. Rooms near the pool and bar area can be noisy; those who want the best views should request a room at the top of the complex. Wi-Fi and air-conditioning aren't available in the guest rooms.

Features

Large public pool, restaurant and pool bar, playground, several shops, sauna, and disco-bar

Eden Rock’s large pool has panoramic views over Galini Bay, and a second children's splash pool makes the area popular with families. There's also a beach with lounge chairs and parasols just below the property, but it’s a steep climb back up to the hotel.

The hotel has a sea-facing restaurant serving a buffet breakfast in the morning and Greek and Cretan cuisine at night, and a half-board option is available. Theme nights are held during the summer season. The Almyra Pool bar serves snacks and drinks throughout the day. During the high season, DJ nights are held at the hotel's on-site 1970s-style bar/nightclub, complete with a disco ball.

The hotel also has a playground with swings and slides, a small kids' club, table tennis and foosball, a lounge with a shelf of books, shops, and a hairdressing salon.
