Bottom Line

Honeymoon Petra Villas is an upscale property featuring strikingly original volcanic rock architecture perched on a lofty cliff face in the quiet Santorini village of Imerovigli. As well as impressive construction, the hotel also boasts one of the largest pools on the caldera, with a 24-hour poolside bar and daybeds (both rare on the island). Rooms vary widely in size from tiny to spacious, though all open to gorgeous sea-view terraces. Lower-tier rooms and bathrooms are so small it's better to look elsewhere if on a budget, but though those wanting to splash the cash will find this an excellent upscale option. Just note that the in-room Wi-Fi is barely usable and unlike at Astra Suites, there are no rooms with plunge pools (though some have hot tubs).

Honeymoon Petra Villas

Scene

Innovative volcanic rock architecture with chic contemporary ambience

What immediately sets the Honeymoon Petra Villas apart from most of the surrounding hotels is the genuinely innovative blend of traditional Cycladic architecture with quirky and creative flair. Built over a period of 20 years and with the help of Swiss geologists, the property deviates (for the most part) from the typical gleaming whitewash in favor of clever formations in black volcanic rock that harmonize with the surroundings. Every size stone from boulders to pebbles has been employed -- together with a playful use of wood -- to create a chic yet rugged charm that feels totally integrated into the caldera cliff face. The family-run hotel also a real emphasis on flora, and the relatively spacious grounds (for Santorini) are bursting with colorful pink and red flowers, potted shrubbery, and flowering cacti. While there's little question from the name who the Honeymoon Petra Villas wants to attract, the clientele isn't all honeymooners. The cool and more contemporary vibe also attracts the custom of younger couples. Children under 14 are not allowed, and as is common for these properties, there are lots of steps to navigate.

Location

Set on lofty outcrop in Imerovigli village, five minutes' drive from Fira

The hotel is perched on a particularly lofty bluff in the relatively peaceful village of Imerovigli. While it cliffside position guarantees some particularly gorgeous views over the caldera basin, it's also one of the windier places on the island. The village is located just north of the Santorini capital, Fira -- a bustling tourist hub and about a five-minute drive away or 25 minutes downhill on foot. The property is also around 20 minutes' drive from Santorini Airport, or nearer 30 minutes from the main port. Airport transportation is available for a fee.

Rooms

Coco Mat mattresses and sea-view terraces -- though some rooms tiny

Accommodation comprises 23 suites, villas, and apartments split between the Traditional Wing, finished in traditional white plaster, and the Petra Wing, covered in dark volcanic rock. Most interiors, however, are typically crisp and whitewashed with a chic contemporary feel and modern soft furnishings. Sizes can vary dramatically from the spacious high-end Honeymoon Suites to the tiny entry-level Traditional Studios. All rooms, however, feature comfy Coco Mat mattresses and luxury Korres bath products, as well as flat-screen TVs, fridges, and tea/coffee facilities. All rooms also open to furnished terrace areas with stunning views -- some from private hot tubs. Wi-Fi is free of charge but coverage is very patchy.

Features

Reputedly the largest cliffside pool on the caldera, with a 24-hour poolside bar

While not large by normal standards, the hotel's infinity-edge swimming pool is positively huge compared to most in the area (in fact it is reputedly the largest on the caldera). It's also the closest you'll get to a swim-up bar anywhere nearby, as there are steps up to the bar from the pool. There is also a splash pool, though as guest must be 14 or older it is mostly decorative. The pool bar restaurant serves snacks and light meals for lunch, as well as drinks 24 hours a day (unusual for the area). While swimming or lounging, guests can enjoy 270-degree of unobstructed caldera views. As well as sun loungers, there's a trio of daybeds overlooking the pool, though suite-level guests get priority. A buffet breakfast is included in the rate, and while decent, quality isn't on par with the standard of the hotel. Spa facilities also include a steam room, outdoor hot tub, and treatment room providing a range of massages.
